The local garage where I get my LR serviced say its the turbo sucking in the oil. they dont service turbos, so can anyone reccomend the best way to get my turbocharger serviced? I have a 96 2.5 (Bmw) Diesel P38 Rangey. dont want to buy a new one if i can help it, they are £400+.

I dont mind sending it away, just looking for a reputable/reliable/recomended/reasonable place.

just thought id asked have you checked inside intercooler hoses 2 make that they are not delaminating inside causing turbo to suck up engine oil instead also look for splits
 
hoses look ok. however the breather valve that connects to the engine and cross over duct doesnt seem as secure as i think it should be. there is no grommit or clips to hold it in place, is this right? in my cd workshop manual, it isnt even illustrated??? see below:

ok, there is a clip on the cross over duct that sort of restricts the breather valve movement, its not air-tight, but seems to be steady and holding.
 
hi big stoo a black smoke on diesels in my experiance is caused by to much fuel being burnt oil being burnt,the turbo does not normally suck up oil unless the sump is over filled or a blockage or collapesd hose restricting breathing,if the turbo hoses are ok and not collapsing or delaminating,does the hoses pressure up on turbo boost,is your intercooler clean inside,we clean these out on a 48k service with special intercooler cleaner,you need to check its boosting ok and hoses flex out on boost pressure we have had intercoolers cracking sucking in air causing black smoke,without seeing this car it is hard to comment,also check the air intake side air filter and such not blocked and clean,how much oil are you using
 
well i know one of the endearing things about LRs are the oil patches, but i get alot, right under the turbo (and it runs down the propshaft and falls at the lowest point), with the fact that its using alot of oil, i would say around 3L a week!. coupled with the black smoke, and what my local garage said convinced me it was a seal on the turbo. i dont have the luxury of ramps or an inspection pit, so i cant really say for sure, but the engine bay looks like ive ram raided an esso oil refinery.

at the weekend i will remove all the hoses and make double sure they are ok, and that there are no blockages, and check the air filter. cheers for the info.
 
well not sure what else to suggest,there is a pipe that fits on the turbo that does leak because it just has an o ring inside the pipe and this does leak it fits on the face of the turbo on the air inlet side,connects from the top piece that goes across the engine to the turbo,you must have a big oil leak somewhere cant all be coming from turbo surely?

How about Turbo Technics ? they service/repair/replace turbo's also any one of the landrover magazine will give listings of Turbo service agents.

Have you taken your car to the main Landrover Agent? (I know this is expensive) surely they are able to service it or even if its a BMW turbo go speak to BMW.

Normally black smoke is a sign that your engine is in pretty poor condition, Rings, Valve seal, Valves etc or you have a crack some where in the lubrication system. (Not much help I know)

Give one of the listed Turbo engineers a ring to see what they say or Turbo Technics.

yeah of course LR could do it, the bmw diesel engine is standard in the p38 rangey. i just loathe to pay main dealer prices.

i have phoned a local turbocharger specialist, they quote me £100 just to look at it, they say usually its between £200-£300 for an overhaul of the type i have described, or £350 for a recon turbo. plus the cost of getting the turbo off/refitted to the motor, they do pick it up and delivery free however (whoopy doo!)

dont suppose taking the turbo off is something i could tackle myself is it? has anyone else managed to take the turbo off/refit it with no ramp or inspection pit?
 
i tell a lie, LR dont service turbos :( i just phoned them. so i would have to go independant anyway.

LR quoted me £760 + Labour + VAT for a shiney new one. (think ill get two, one as a spare.....NOT)

but ill check all the hoses first, like piglet said, the balck smoke is too much fuel to air ratio, so may just be a hose problem. as for the oil usage, suppose ill get round to that when ive checked all the air intakes.
 
I have similar issue with a 2003 Vogue TD6. It continually smokes until after about 7 miles of drivinig. No idea what is causing this, but it is highly embarassing and a massive cause for concern, any ideas anybody?

Taking the turbo off is fairly easy

it come off complete with the manifold

all of which can be done without a pit or a ramp

i have just taken my turbo apart on one of the project P38's in the workshop

so it cant be that bad.

let me know if you need more advise or pics once you get it off
 
If you get the engine warm and its still black smoking, its definitely not the turbo seals, it would be white and pretty dense on boost. If you still think its turbo, its doable but make sure you have a 12 point Snap-on socket for the four turbo-to-manifold bolts, they are well on and tight and will kill a normal socket, the bolts are spline drive if you have a set.
Start from the air filter and work to the turbo, there`s a pipe problem,could be the temp sensor is kidding the pump its Arctic cold?
Blue is oil,black is unburnt excess fuel,white is burnt excess fuel,simples.
 
I would take the manifold and turbo off the motor as it is a lot easier to access that way

if you undo the clamp in the middle youi can split the turbo apart with a screwdiver by tapping carefully

you now end up with the turbo away from manifold without having to undo the funny bolts

you can buy a special set of bits for them
( brother in law has some which is good as head bolts and even rocker cover are the same sort )


i then took out circlip and then soaked remainder in diesel for two days

the ally bit and the vane bit fell apart after that with a tap

easy enough to do
 
Check your air filter too, if this is blocked it will lead to overfuelling on acceleration.

I was going to ask how much oil are you using, as some engines just drink more than others, but 3l a week? That is a lot!
