RS 232 is the serial port, so you might need to connect everything to everything for it to 'see' it .. unfortunately serial devices aren't hot-swappable so you also might need to reboot it all.

You could try going into the hardware Device Manager to see if the pc can find the serial port and load the driver that way.

To be honest Paul, the serial port device should detect quite happily and the driver should configurre without too many problems. The real issue here may be that serial ports are often not included on modern main boards which will necessitate the use of a PCI serial port or a usb-serial converter.
 
guess why i run coputers i build myself with serial ports in them - most high end motherboards have all the hardware, you just need a plate with the socket in to connect to the header on the board. :)
USB microchip programmers dnt work very well.
