OK So, you've got a '98 V8 Disco with LPG and it won't start.

1. Does it have plenty of BOTH fuels?

2. When you say it won't start, can you be more precise - do you mean it turns over on the starter but won't fire, or, do you mean it won't turn over?

What happened on the trip home, describe as best you can what actually occurred. Eg. did it just die on you while you were going along or what??

Give us more to work on so that we can try and help.

If the dizzy on your V8 is like the one in my old range rover, there's a two pin connector on the side of it. I had trouble with it not making contact properly, result - I'd grind to an embarassing halt at random times. Gave it a good clean and pinched the contacts to tighten them and that sorted it. Dunno if that's any help.......

have you contacted the seller..

as according to that ad its only just had an mot done, maybe they disturbed something while inspecting or working on it...

also with it being an ebay sale you should be covered by them.

well here goes. when driving it on the lpg it dies when going over 2000rpm, although when driving down the motor way it was good as long as i didnt take my foot of excellerator if i did it died. (while going along)but if i switched it over to petrol as soon as it died it would be fine. but 40 miles away from home on the motor way it died and would not switch back to petrol, and the lights for lpg had gone out. thankfully my knight in shinning armour was there to tow me to the next service. he gave all the fuses a look at and wiggled all the wires and its started again, but only lasted a minute. then nothing, theres no tick or tock (wont turn over) but all electrics are good.
he had a good look at it in the daylight next dat, its should'nt have ran out of lpg as it does around 150 to a tank and only registered 97 miles or so when broke down, unless the man didn't reset the clock when he filled it, and there is still a bit of petrol in it. could it be the starter motor?

where am i to look for the 2pin connector?

let me know if this makes sense i was a bit shaken by it all and got a little worked up.

see if its the starter motor fuse - its behind the facia below the steering wheel - its the bottom row about middle - a 10 amp. this is what it was when mine wouldnt start the other day, the ignition lights were all on and bright but when i turned the key - nothing - the lights didnt even dim - if they dim then at least you know power is getting to the starter and in which case its prob the starter or starter soleniod thats gone - you could try whacking it to free it up, i used to have to do that to an old mazda van of mine. ps have you got a haynes manual - it has a problem solving chapter in the back. ps it could also be the starter motor relay, or maybe even the immobilisor!

Hi,

You do not give me much to go on but....When you turn on the ignition can you hear the petrol pump whirring? Do you get a "click" after about 20 - 30 seconds? (this should be the pump relay switching off as the fuel line is pressurised.) The click is similar to that on old diesal engines when the glow plugs are hot only...the Rover V8 has a pressurised fuel line and the pump relay switches off (on initial starting) when the pressure is reached.

Also have you checked the spark plugs? Are they wet (i.e. is the engine flooded. It is easy to flood V8s.

Are you getting any spark to the plugs?

Does the starter motor turn? If not is it stuck? Try rocking the engine in gear to release it.

Enough for now.

thank you all for your help please keep it coming as i will try anything...

when i turn my key there is a click from under my passenger dash, thats all i get.

i'm not very good at describing stuff am i.
lol sorry:rolleyes:

As James says your battery could be "flat".

Do the headlights work? Turn them on and try starting the engine. Do they dim?
The cliock could be that all is OK with the starting relays - maybe the starter motor is jammed/faulty!
Keep your responses coming.

can i just say how greatful i am to you all. each and every one of you. especially mr nice. thank you, i looked under the dash as early as i could this morn, i'm gagging to get her started well i looked at the fuses and noticed that the fuses were wrong to the diagram, so i swapped the wrong fuses round and guess what? she blooming started, i called the other half and woke him up with the sound of my beautiful v8 rumbling through the phone. he was amazed... very proud... worse thing is i'm not aloud to take her out, he said i've got to get her serviced before i do anything so i'm looking on e bay for a genuine oil filter and stuff, he's not back for a week he's fishing. so i've got to wait. and guess what i cant. but i'll try.

i'm so happy now thanks to all of you, who need's the garage when we have you guys... give yourselves a pat on the back from me...

So the first thing to do is to find out why the starter motor is not turning the engine over.

When you try to start the engine, watch the lights on the dash - do they go dim when you try to turn it over? DO NOT touch the accelerator whilst trying to start the engine. If they do, you may have a knackered battery - have you checked this and/or tried starting with another battery?

More will come but maybe if we do this a bit at a time we can get it sorted
