Hi All,
Recently posted on here regarding my 97 DSE Auto 2.5 Range Rover.

Running Cold, went to change thermostat, no thermostat present!!
Put new one in, been fine for 5 days, has just broken down.

AA present, Top Hose has blown off and they are saying it has no water circulation, they are taking the thermostat out, filling here up and we are going to get her home.

Advice??? Water Pump or Head Gasket and how can I check what it is.

Only had it 2 weeks :( Private Sale, not much of a come back.

HELP!!!

work through the system starting cheapest first

rad cap
thermostat
hoses
water pump

but make sure mr AA man bleeds any air out of system, fill tank run with cap of untill air bubbles come out.

OK - Update time.

Spent time with Mr AA, high probability that I may not have tighten the top hose clip enough

So plan of action is as follows:
Ensure thermostat in back in and sealed
Ensure clips of hose tight
Top up and ensure no air locks
Run to temp and observe.
Going to run for a few days and see how it goes (With water in the boot!!)

OK Guys, bowing to your expert knowledge...the fact that it has been fine for 5 days and the hose has come off, is it likely that I didn't tighten it up enough????

Highly possible. I would personly change the waterpump anyway. Its not unknown for these to become a little tired with gummed up fins. The same for the rad. But first go through the routine again and just check everything daily, when hot.

Mine kept blowing hose off, and then in one massive overheat in outside lane at 70, split rad tank. Turned out it was water pump. It had one with a plastic rotor that had disintegrated into a pile of pieces in the bottom of the chamber! Replaced it with one with a metal rotor, and it's been fine since. Many people suggest it's a good move to replace rad every 10years/100k miles, as well, as the tanks do have a habit of spliting once aged.

Taking the thermostat out is a classic when the head gasket is gone, as the guy said start there and get it sniffed. Have a close look and see if the head has been off already recently, could be the bastid changed the gasket and its gone again, crack in head or warped to fook.

Water wont circulate when the gaskets fooked, so dont spend fokal on this until you check the above.

OK second update.

Got it all back together with thermostat in. Now it does appear to be using water , but it is running fine (No miss fire...) I have no oil in the water and no water in the oil.

Apart from the apparent water loss everthing is fine...So where it the water going??

Also, if its head gasket, what is the likely cost going to be?

Thanks

Its going into a cylinder if it aint leaking onto the ground.

You wont know until you get the head off, could just be a gasket, could be the head needs skimmed, could be the head has a crack, and it could be the block is cracked, although cracked blocks are uncommon and its probably just a head gasket.

Get the head off check it with a flat edge a steel ruler, you can get spray on crack testers so its up to you, clean it up spray it and check it, fit a new gasket and off you go. It aint a hard gasket to do, you will get all the help you need on here.

Had a similar problem myself recently.

Engine overheated. Turned out pipe into expansion tank blew off. Pipe back on, water refilled and it seems ok.

Checked oil cap. All black. Water/coolant is not mucky.

Not sure what the cause was but easy suspects would be rad cap, pressure cap.
