Thought all was going so well with my 2002 4.6 came home from work today and saw water around the osf wheel popped the bonnet to see water header tank empty! which i had only checked 2 days ago. refilled with 5litres!!!!! of oat+water removed air and left to tick over now the temp gauge does not move from middle never has since I've owned it and today the wife who did a short run in it does not recall any unusual temp or lights and no smells there is no mush inside oil filler cap and once up to temperature i can still squeeze top hose although there is definitely more pressure there when up to temperature I'm sure the water has come out of the over flow but why? HELP

There are really only a couple of things that make the engine push water out when running, an air lock, a faulty water pump, head gasket. Oh and maybe a sticky Thermosta

Just returned from a 10 mile drive along dual carriage way and country lanes parked up left idling no problem at all temp gauge never moved from centre. car runs as sweet as on LPG. not sure what to do maybe a faulty expansion tank cap?

Well my friend I think you can rule out head gasket which is good news and there’s no air lock either, so could it be that the water had just got low and no one noticed, or it maybe a sticky thermostat, I would carry a can of water with you and just keep an eye on it, if it boils up again I would change the thermostat

i recon you should certainly replace the expansion cap!
if it did just run low of coolant and wasnt noticed where did it run low to! replace the cap.

Check the carpet in the drivers footwell, you could be suffering from the dreaded "O" rings leaking.

I had a strange issue too last Thursday, my temp gauge went almost out of the white zone, not into the red and no light on, I got home popped the bonnet and found the top hose hard to squeeze. Next day I checked coolant level and it was up to the fill line, so no loss. I have a new water pump, and have replaced the O rings, so after reading this post, I suspect a possibly sticky thermostat. Has been running fine ever since though but will change as a matter of course rather than take any risks. Not sure how hard the top hose should be to squeeze when at running temp, maybe someone could advise?

I think it's the hot weather is starting to catch up with components on their last legs. I've just ordered new viscous fan for mine as I discovered it wasn't working properly on Sunday when it nearly overheated twice, and replacing the thermostat at the same time as a precaution.

No wet carpet first thing i checked and the viscous fan really shifts some air even at tick over will replace the cap and keep my eye on it. The temp gauge quickly gets to the middle and does not move from there

going to try to get a cap tomorrow did a short run in the car today returned home had a look under the bonnet at no time did the temp move from middle water was evident around header tank area and had lost about half a litre. Hope LL keep them in stock
