Hi all, so many of you will know that I recently - ’upgraded’ - my tyres to 33”. Great I hear you say, prat I also hear you say. Your gearing won’t work, speedo problems, yada yada yada. I don’t remember any one telling me that my spare tyre would no longer fit in the wheel well in the boot. Maybe you did, but but I ‘forgot’ to listen to that.
So we are where we are.
Any one know where i can buy a swing arm for mounting a f*** off heavy wheel on, say the rear bumper, so i can carry it but still use the boot? Any other practical suggestions for where to put it - I challenge you to resist the most obvious answer!
 
Ive been driving for nearly 50 years and I can count the number of punctures (not counting slow punctures) on the fingers of one hand. Two of them were because the tyres were periously worn. I have only had to get the AA out once.

I think the French guy who does serious off road stuff had a hinged hanger to fit the spare, I can't remember his name.

It's easy to overlook the bleeding obvious :rolleyes:
Manuf. design spare wheel stowage to accommodate the factory wheel/tyre & can be a bit mean with the tolerance. I've replaced the spare in my Classic with a tyre of the correct spec. but it being a different make meant I struggled to fit it in the well o_O

If you asked I missed it but I could have told you about this as I have BFG KO2 tires which are 31.5 inches and the only way I can get the spare to fit is by deflating it. I have thought of adding 33 inch tires and have looked into outside carriers. Don't know if any of these are available in UK but there seem to be at least two options:

Smittybuilt makes swingaway tire carriers for Jeeps that simply bolt onto a Smittybuilt bumper. For the P38 you would need a custom rear bumper.

Wilco makes a swingaway carrier that slides into the 2 inch trailer hitch. On the P38 the hitch is recessed too far and would have to be extended level with rear bumper.

Maybe you can get someone to copy/fabricate on of these.

A good tire repair kit might work unless you cut a sidewall. I was told you can plug sidewall cuts but I guess it depends on how bad.
Think I will stay with my 31.5 tires. Have not been stuck yet but underside has taken some beating. Don't drive in mud very often either.

Range Rover Evolution made one. 996Turbo on here but not seen for a while.

Does it fit deflated? Or put it on the roof with roofbars.

I think in over 50 years of motoring that I've run out of fuel more times than I have had a flat tyre yet I don't carry a can of fuel in the boot.
