Ive been driving for nearly 50 years and I can count the number of punctures (not counting slow punctures) on the fingers of one hand. Two of them were because the tyres were periously worn. I have only had to get the AA out once.

Me too - well - 40 years, can’t remember the last time i got a flat in ordinary driving. However, I have shredded two tyres off road where you frequently encounter sharp rocks for miles on end. I think one of us gets a flat on almost every trip where there are 6 cars - and often side wall, in the middle of Wales on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday - you really need to be able to be able support yourself. So carrying a spare is essential. Even, then your game is over if you get a flat you can’t repair by the roadside because you can’t risk driving without a good spare - so you have to retire but at least you can drive to a garage/home.

It's easy to overlook the bleeding obvious
Manuf. design spare wheel stowage to accommodate the factory wheel/tyre & can be a bit mean with the tolerance. I've replaced the spare in my Classic with a tyre of the correct spec. but it being a different make meant I struggled to fit it in the well o_O
Hmm, use an ordinary spare like a space saver - That’s not a bad idea!

"I don’t remember any one telling me that my spare tyre would no longer fit in the wheel well in the boot."

If you asked I missed it but I could have told you about this as I have BFG KO2 tires which are 31.5 inches and the only way I can get the spare to fit is by deflating it. I have thought of adding 33 inch tires and have looked into outside carriers. Don't know if any of these are available in UK but there seem to be at least two options:

Smittybuilt makes swingaway tire carriers for Jeeps that simply bolt onto a Smittybuilt bumper. For the P38 you would need a custom rear bumper.

Wilco makes a swingaway carrier that slides into the 2 inch trailer hitch. On the P38 the hitch is recessed too far and would have to be extended level with rear bumper.

Maybe you can get someone to copy/fabricate on of these.

A good tire repair kit might work unless you cut a sidewall. I was told you can plug sidewall cuts but I guess it depends on how bad.
Think I will stay with my 31.5 tires. Have not been stuck yet but underside has taken some beating. Don't drive in mud very often either.
Thanks, that’s really helpful. I think my towing hitch extends further out than normal and I was wondering if I could modify a bike rack or similar that fits on the hitch.

My club requires us to carry full size tires for all off road excursions. I have had one sidewall cut that could not be fixed. Bought two new tires and then discovered the remaining old tire would barely fit in the well. No 33's going in there. One of our club members had 3 flat tires on a trip. Had to borrow 2 spares.
