Hi all, just after a bit of help please. I've just purchased a 98 disco 300 tdi auto and I'm already having problems. I'm getting black smoke no matter what speed I'm doing, none at idle though, also the car is gutless, I can do motorway speeds and keep up with normal traffic conditions however as soon as I approach any sort of incline the power drastically drops, so much so by the time I'm approaching the top of a hill I'm barely doing 10mph with my foot to the floor. I've done the usual, full service, injectors checked, egr removed. The car starts and runs brilliant it's just these issues I'm struggling with. Any help or advice would be great please. I'm not a mechanic so please try keep responses as simple as possible for me. Also the turbo has been checked and was fine. Thanks

Which are the air intake hoses? One thing I did find odd was when I opened the air box to replace the filter there wasn't one in there

Remove and check the quality of the hoses to and from the turbo.
If the suction hose to the turbo has delaminated inside, it will close off when the turbo spools up and starts to suck in, starving the engine of air and giving you black smoke(too much fuel being burnt in too little air).
I would advice you remove all the hoses and run it naturally aspirated for a short while to see if the problem goes away then.
If the previous owner was running the car without an air filter, just shows he may not have cared too much for it.

Thank you, I'll check all the hoses tomorrow as it's currently pouring it down, I'll update tomorrow once I've done them, I'll also remove them and take the car for a drive as suggested and see if it's any better

Had all hoses off, took it for a drive, no difference at all, all hoses cleaned out and refitted, still no different. Any further suggestions?

Do you feel the transmission kick down gears when you're approaching the inclines you mentioned that the car struggles on?
When it slows down like you mentioned, does it sound like the engine's speed is higher even though your road speed's dropped?

So my reason behind my last questions have to do with ruling out the transmission as a cause of your apparent loss of power; that is if its actually transferring all of the engine's output to the wheels.
Have you as yet checked the fluid level in the transmission?

so if you drove it with no hoses attached and it was the same i suspect the turbo may not be spinning up,

with the hoses off see if you can spin the turbo with your finger (engine off)

I had this a few months back there is a 100mm hose going in to the turbo held on with a jubile clip undo that and have a feel of the turbo blades they should be have no play in the bearing
as said you need to remove and inspect the 2 smaller rubber hoses top and bottom of the intercooler next to the radiadtor also its worth cleaning the intercooler while your at it
I ended up changing the intercooler /hoses the manifold was cracked and the turbo had a bent veign possibly caused by a bit of rubber from the inside of the hose
The hardest part was getting the turbo /exhaust manifold seperated from the exhaust I ended up paying £30 for a de cat exhaust section if you de cat it and put a knn air filter on it will pull like a train and never stop :D
It sounds daunting but all this was simple to do with 3 or 4 socket sizes no special tools needed

The transmission does kick down. The engine speed isn't higher though, I presume you mean like a slipping clutch?

I'll check that today, although when the hoses were off I could hear the turbo whistling away and I can't hear the turbo at all with the hoses attached

I'll check the turbo blades today, I'll also remove the intercooler and pipe work and give it all a good clean out. Fingers crossed I find the culprit as I really don't want to part with the car but I need something fully functional quickly as this was meant to be our daily car
