Right I'm sure this has been talked about a few times so apologies if I'm covering old ground I just couldn't find a definitive answer. My P38 has 18" rims as much as I like to be able to pose on the school run my beasty does also have to work for it's fuel. It tows my girls horse errrr in it's horse box. As such we spend a fair amount of time in and out of fields. At the moment I have a mish mash of tyres fitted from different makes but I'd say they are all relatively road bias with the most rugged one being a Pirrelii Scorpion. I want to fit a more rugged rubber tyre to cope better off road but not so wild it upsets the car to much when on road. What do you guys suggest for 18" rims? Or am I better off sourcing some 16" rims to widen my choice of rubber? Are BFG's T/A series of tyres worth a pop or are General Grabbers better suited to the task?

If your looking for a good all round tyre you wont go far wrong than the Grabber AT2.
Had them on me Paj for 5 years now & not one single problem, in all, a very good all round tyre with plenty of grip when you need it on the slippy stuff.
When the tyres I've got on me Rangy are up guess what I'll be fitting, sez it all really.

Cooper will out preform them both, comes with a 60,000 mile warranty. I have gotten 80k before replacement

They don't make BFG AT's in 255/55/R18 anyway. But they do make General Grabber AT's. The AT2 has been discontinued in favour of the new AT. Just had a set done for £161 per tyre fitted etc which was actually cheaper than most places were charging for a budget road tyre!

personaly i would look out for some 16''s, ride is better and if you plan to keep it for a while tyres tend to be cheaper too with a better choice. I am on 18''s and hate them.
Put 16''s on my last one. There is a very good chap near you who will be more than happy to help, i can dig his details out if you like.

Cheers guys. I like the idea guys. Generals or Coopers are now top of the list. Any others?

I too would recommend a switch to 16 inchers. There is a glut of very, very good ATs out there at the moment, the difference in performance between them is marginal, I've got GG ATs which are superb in all conditions and are very quiet. But then I'm sure I wouldn't complain if I had a set of BFG ATs, Yokohama G012 Geolanders, Toyo Open County ATs, Copper Discoverer A/Ts, Nexen Roadean AT2. All excellent tyres. The days of there being one stand-out tyre are long gone.

My vote is the General Grabber AT. The 18" wheels definitely handle more positively but the 16" is a much smoother ride and (IMO) better off road.

If I see some 16" at a decent price I'm having them!
