OK, time to bite the bullet.

4 new tyres needed to replace the existing (3 unknown brand, 1 Goodyear). Standard D2 18" alloys on a 7 seat, air sprung, ACE, auto, Td5 (moderate ECU map)

Mostly on-road usage (say 90%+, but don't want to be embarressed on unmade surfaces / grass etc). Currently the truck does tramline a little on rutted A-Roads - but understand this can be caused by 18" rims (or tyres, or pressures, or suspension, or steering). Most driving is A-Roads/ Motorway so don't want to go too "all-terrain" as I don't want the drone of the tread, and also need decent brake / water dispersal performance on the black stuff.

Any suggestions/personal favourites? I know this has been asked before, but with the constant development in tyres I'd appreciate any bang-up-to-date advice.

So far, the new version of the General Grabber appeals, but worried it may be too much of a compromise on-road...

Phone Avon and rant at them for discontinuing Rangers.

They WERE good compromise tyres.

Oh and Goodyear stopped making Wranglers as well.
 
Questions regarding recommendations for tyres have for so long elicited the stock reply that "round black rubber ones generally work best".
Tyre choice depends on so much more than the rim size, not least the bank balance size and personal preference.
Not to mention the claim that "So-and-so said they were great but they're useless, I want some compensation for wasting my money"
 
Cheers @brian47 - I did realise I was opening up a potential can of worms - its just when I am looking at +£500 expense, I was perhaps wondering if someone had discovered the "new" Avon Ranger or similar.

Regards bank balance, I've not got cash to burn (who has these days) but there is such a range in the £95 to £130 bracket its a bit challenging deciding what to do. Concerning the rim size, my research on this forum (and others) suggested some people have noticed an improvement in going down from an 18" to 16" has helped with the tram-lining, but others had suggested General Grabbers had helped with the problem on 18"s.

I've no personal preference, otherwise I'd probably not be asking for ideas, definitely round, black and airtight though!

Maybe best if I end the thread here and make a decision.

Yeah, I do understand what you're saying.

The price is always a major consideration, as is the availability, whether you're prepared to use an internet supplier or a local tyre service. The last time I bought road tyres, I looked for the deals available online, found one supplier who had an offer on Pirelli tyres, 130 quid each or a set of four worked out at 99.95 a corner and had my local indie garage fit them for me. The local tyre specialist could only offer me a mix of Chinese jobbies so I declined that.

Regarding the difference between 16" and 18" rims, I can't comment on the "tramlining", but because of the extra compliance of the increased height of the sidewall on the 16" tyres I get an appreciably softer ride.

The Disco 2 is quite capable off-road even with "road" tyres and it's often said that using all-terrains with their slightly more aggressive tread patterns can increase road noise.

So, as I said, it's down to what the bank balance can stand in the end.

I've got some grabber AT s fitted 255/55 r18 109s and I think they're really good. Not too noisy on road never slip. Don't struggle with mud. Just had to replace one because of a cut and was 136 fitted though so they're not cheap. I always thought they seemed very planted on road and off. Not done any serious off road in in it but on grass and gravel they preformed well. Not got stuck on farmland yet either

Had them fitted today.... very very happy... actually went for a higher aspect ration of 60 (factory on 18’s being 55). So not 100% OE but already experiencing a more compliant ride.... and no tram lining, vibrating, wondering.... garage only had 4 AT2’s so AT3 on rear door.... will have to deduct a few mph on the speedo though....
