Hi all,

I have a 58 plate RRS TDV8.
Last night it started up fine and drove perfectly for 10 miles. I pulled up and felt a vibration through the car, and noticed the REVs had dropped.
When we pulled away, there was a rattle coming from underneath the car.
I then felt it lose power, so pulled over and switched it off. As i did this, some white smoke came from the exhaust then a strong "eggy" smell from underneath.
The car will turnover but won't start.

I'm currently waiting to have the car shipped to a very good LR independant garage, but looking for advise as well.
Two seperate people I'd spoken to, one being the recovery guy, said it was the catalytic converter, the other opted for a broken turbo.

Anybody else had a similar thing ?

Regards.

I've never seen a failed cat on a tdv8 in 5 years of repairing them, although there is always a first time! Turbo failure is usually accompanied by oil in the exhaust and subsequent smoke. Usually the N/S turbo seizes, and the O/S seals fail, I have no idea why it always ends up this way, but after doing 6 or 7 pairs now they've always been the same. Another classic turbo failure symptom is epic crankcase pressure, if you can get it to run briefly try to CAREFULLY remove the oil cap, if you have turbo issues there'll be a lot of pressure. Don't try this with the dipstick............. don't ask me how I know!!
