Hi folks,

Freelander TD4 2004 has been struggling on motorway to go over 50 mph, 2000 rev with engine light comes on when going over 2000 revs but resets when slows…

Followed the main threads on this forum and changed out with Land Rover original parts:

* Turbo solenoid valve (2 hose connections)
* EGR pipe (broke when removing EGR valve)
* 2 hoses (one was partially melted from time/contact with EGR housing)
* High pressure sensor @ loc to bottom left of inlet manifold looking from in front of vehicle (showed up on diagnostics as faulty)

checked the main pipes look good, cleaned out Egr valve,
replaced gaskets to cyclone crank case housing.

Pump was only replaced few years ago with original Land Rover part, seems good.

I remember replacing a ‘turbo boost actuator’ I think it was called (3 hose connections I think not the 2 hose one) towards the front of the engine, awkward to get located just under trim I think (not under inlet manifold), but I only bought Eastern European cheap one as far as I can remember… this May be the part that’s acting up?? I think it’s the one shown in photo attached with the three hose connections?

what’s this part actually called, anyone got a part number?

I’m down around 500 quid now but to be fair it needed a few upgrades, just passed the 100k mile range.

I can’t think of anything else from reading the fantastic threads here… it feels like the car is running better than ever since all the changes, but it’s like something is in default mode, also drinking diesel like I do Guinness on paddy’s day!

any help on this much appreciated,

Many thanks,
Anthony

Hey Artic and Gel,
It’s not the first photo but the other one (replaced the first one last month). I took a reading with the i900 just getting p1470, other threads show this as loss of boost pressure iirc. Maybe the plastic manifold is cracked, must do a smoke test or something. The other thread I was reading was MAF sensor issue.

I’m thinking to replace the second solenoid (3pipe) then MAF then bring to specialist dealer for diagnostics…

many thanks for the super photos.

Just double checked, the part I replaced is:

STC4198 (solenoid valve for Freelander TD4, 04 Reg).

Is there another solenoid valve which controls flow to turbo?

is there a part number for the little air filter on the
STC4198? I just re-used the old one (with pen pointing to it) on the new Solenoid…

cheers,
A

Is it this part you are referring too, the EGR solenoid, which is under the manifold, or are you referring too the turbo boost solenoid and it's associated filter.

Anthony make sure all vaccum hoses are ok from the EGR and the turbo boost solenoid,
little filter.

Also you could unplug the MAF and see how it reacts then, T4 or another diagnostic will or should take the guessing out of the game.

EGR solenoid part is WAV100429 very rare they go wrong to be honest, and rimmer link is only for part number you can get them for about £25.00

thanks Artic, much appreciated.

I’ll try disconnecting the MAF and see what happens.

The Egr solenoid I have has the little box clipped on its side similar to rimmer brothers,

Is there turbo vent filter another option instead of that vent box or is it connected to a different hose?

i fired the bmw cyclone filter crankcase option few years ago and recently just changed the gasket in case there was an issue - appears fine.

i only changed hoses to Egr valve and solenoid, I’ll change the other hoses too just in case.

many thanks,
Anthony

Hi Artic,

Just reading through the threads and it seems I may have fitted the wrong solenoid…

i purchased a new turbo boost solenoid (STC4198) and replaced the solenoid under the manifold which is actually the EGR solenoid! (part 2a in photo attached - for a bmw engine so ignore the references to 3) I was wondering why the replacement didn’t come with the little air vent box on the side of it.

so I need to take this off, put the EGR solenoid back on (with vent box I borrowed from it to put on boost solenoid), then change over the turbo boost solenoid (part 1c in photo attached) along with vent filter which will be one of the hoses dangling in the engine.

Where exactly is the turbo boost solenoid? Are they actually the same devices just used in different applications? Any photos or directions how to locate would be much appreciated.

sorry for the long messages, this area is new to me. Attached some photos I found to back up my logic.

many thanks,
Anthony

Where exactly is the turbo boost solenoid?

It's next to the turbo, which is at the back of the engine, so you have to climb under the car, making sure it's well supported of course.
Are they actually the same devices just used in different applications?

No. The turbo control solenoid valve and the EGR control valve are different items, so you have to use the correct part for each application.

However I'm not sure your issue is with the turbo.

Normally a lack of power and the orange warning light means low fuel pressure on low pressure fuel supply, which is down to the rear (after 2003) low pressure fuel pump.

Thanks Artic, good to know.

I’ll disconnect the MAF first then look at changing out the diesel pump filter followed by the pump itself (under rear driver side arch).

Would you happen to have the part number for the EGR solenoid valve?

I’ll reconnect the part I removed and may as well replace the old Boost Solenoid valve along with inlet filter shown in your thread.

cheers, much appreciated the quick reply.

Thanks Nodge,

i tried without MAF connected and no change so will replace pump tomorrow.

regarding the small filter that connects with hose to the booster solenoid, does this just rest on the engine block or is there a clip to hold in place? The existing one doesn’t have that filter.

Best,
Anthony

that filter normally has a clip attached to the IRD breather pipe ..
which is the hook shaped pipe .. behind the oil filler cap ..
```````
no clip ? .. couple of small cable ties will do the job ;-]
```````````

Thanks folks, great advice and looks liked I’ve sorted it by:

replace Egr solenoid with replacement (thanks Artic)

replace booster solenoid with new part

replace ALL hoses

replace mini filter to turbo solenoid atmosphere hose

replaced drivers side rear wheel arch pump (with bearmarch cheap ‘very noisy’ pump lol)

Picks up 70mph+ without issue, had a kick in it’s step! Just need to test over a longer distance but looks good!

Cheers,
Anthony
