Hi all, Ive been useing my 1998 defender 300tdi 90 for about 5 months . No problems left it on the drive for a few days after doing a oil change and the transmission warning light came on, any ideas. All help appreciated. πŸ‘

Did not know this either, but have known some rig up this lamp to a low coolant warning sender.

Take a photo of the warning light.will help us all.
Is this an auto?

Hi as promised a picture of the warning light a cog with a thermometer in the centre. It was going well, even passed the mot without any advisory notes.πŸ‘ changed the oils in the axles, transferbox and gear box, still ran ok . Left it for a couple of days . And when i started it the light came on.

Your engine is not running in that pic (well I hope it isn't). does it stay on once you start it?

J

Yes, doesn't go off with the engine running. I just turned the keyone click to light up the dash lights for the picture.

Not spotted that symbol on defenders before.
Now the sensor may be.
On the gearbox oil cooler. Do you have 1 ? Some later ones had these fitted.
Don’t normally see the probes on gear boxes

Only probe ive seen on the gearbox is for the reversing light but will have a look later. Where is the gearbox oil cooler situated. To give me somewhere to start.

Crawl under the motor & find the gearbox. Look for some pipes & follow these.
Most coolers are accros the front of the motor infront of the radiator.

Now you could just have disturbed a cable to earth while you been doing maintenance.

Ok thankyou, could the oil cooler be on the left hand sideof the radiator as you stand in front with two metal pipes that join on to rubber ones, look like they are going into the the housing oul sensor and the oil filter ?

Just a thought.
When changed the oil how much came out? And how much did you put in?

Or did you only do the engine oil?

Engine oil cooler.
I would have thought a gearbox oil cooler would be a separate cooler. A small radiator or some additional pipe with fins on them.

That is the engine oil cooler, part of main radiator.

Do this, it should be easy to see if it has a cooler

I have a feeling it might be a spare warning light getting illuminated somehow. The dash warning light cluster was also used in other vehicles.

Example below
