Well I had the good news today from the garage....

I took my Defender 90 in with a leak from the transfer box, just been told it needs a new transfer box and gear box.. £800. (Second hand)

It has a 200tdi discovery engine, discovery transfer box and 360 gear box (I think)..

Do I go ahead with the price as it's second hand and going to take a month! Or get prices for a bigger engine and have it all done something like a 4.2 supercharged! I have already spent a lot of money on it and it does look very clean.

Help...

I expect someone who knows a lot more than me will be along in a minnit, but I find it hard to imagine an oil leak that needs both a gearbox and tranny box replacing to fix:eek:
Got any photos or info about what type of oil is leaking or where it's leaking from?

It's not the same garage that said the calliper bolts had a left hand thread???

Take it somewhere else. A leak is not a good reason to replace a box, assuming it's working OK. Might just need a new seal - which costs a few pounds (plus labour).

I'd get a second opinion from a LR mechanic preferably not a main dealer, where are you? someone might be able to point you in the right direction.

Sorry guys a bit more info was needed ...

It was difficult to get in to first gear and the low range would not stay in situation it kept popping out, but would work if pushed in and held.

The gear box I'm sure I was told it is R360.

No pictures at present as it's still in the garage.

I should imagine it's a Defender gear box or the stick would be in the wrong place - Unless they have gone to the effort of converting??

Probably an lt77 gearbox(reverse to near side and forward)

I would say that replacing both sounds a bit extreme!!!

I don't know where you are but there are people that help

James Martin in Lincolnshire can recon for less than that.

If you can drop the two boxes yourself and get them to James Martin he'll sort them and post back.

Post you location or put it on you details and there maybe peeps out there that can help near you!!!

P S Who ever heard of a left hand threaded caliper bolt!!

Are they LR mechanics or back street oiks

" P S Who ever heard of a left hand threaded caliper bolt!!"

That refers to a thread in the Disco section about brake caliper bolts, where his garage told him the bolts were "reverse threaded"

Thanks for all advice guys.

It's a land rover specialist RST Land Rover on Mersea island. He just seemed a bit vague about it all too. They haven't dropped the box out just played about with low range and gear stick I presume. The gears were a bit clunky but then again it's an old car 1986. If I get it reconditioned will it be much tighter etc?

I live in Essex.

That's right, reverse is far over near side and forward (very close to 1st)

Reverse is for an LT77 not an R380

Pressbrake is in Essex he might know some one but James Martin used to be a Land Rover reconditioner - Speak to him and get you car back - They don't know what they are talking about if they can't even identify the correct gearbox!! James will be able to tell you roughly whats wrong with the symptons.

Loads of help on hear!!

A well reconditioned box should work as well as a new one, but may feel a bit looser due to wear on the splines. Gear selection should be much improved with new synchros. If she has covered +200k miles it's probably time for a recon. The transfer box fault may be just a common problem with the selector. As before, James Martin is the man to advise. Unless they've been terribly abused, gearboxes should last a long time.

Thanks all think I'll get it back and get it taken out and courier to James Martin.

He should be along soon.
I did that with my R380 but I drove it up there and he did it while I helped and watched (or hindered and annoyed!!:))

Seriously though if a so called LR garage can't tell a LT77 from a R380 then
they are not a LR specialist!!!!!!
move on and leave behind

Check out this link for a list of free PDF downloads for manuals to work on your Defender and gearbox
pdf Land Rover Manuals | Landroverweb.com

The transfer box low range/high range may just be the linkages need stripping, cleaning and greasing up.
As for the box that is defo internal.
Take the oppotunity to fit a new clutch and rear crankshaft oil seal while the box is out.
Look hard enough on the web and there are some how to's on how to remove the gearbox. It can be done with out a engine crane but it is a damn sight easier with one!!
I know - I've done both ways!!!

James

RST have a good rep, never heard anything bad, what part of Essex. Loads of essex lads have breakers at the moment

That's what I thought, but they seem to be very blazé with what they are saying.

In Colchester.

Thanks for info about replacing other parts while it's out, I thought they would have to take it apart really to know what needs doing. I'll give them another call tomorrow and try get some more sense.

You can pick up a knackered disco1 for peanuts. I might even have a pair of boxes going by next weekend off a 200TDi disco1....

If you take the gear linkage etc off the top of a defender R380 they go onto a disco R380 and convert it as far as I have been told its not that big an issue. They is someone selling the conversion bits on here from memory.
