Apparently, the felt washer 512791 that seals the selector shaft where it emerges into daylight is no longer available.

Any good reason not to replace it with an O ring?

(I can't think of anything lying around the house (old kids toys etc.) that might be cutuppable). I did have a felt pad for applying stickers, but probably ditched it when I moved house...

Hi JAmes,

In this pic, the selector rod at the back, if you look carefully there's a washer on the shaft which sits in a rebate in the housing, and is held there by the steel turreted cover.

its usually an o ring on high low selector sits in the rebate

Makes sense as I relcall getting one last year OK. I think felt is functionally different to an o ring. Its a poor seal but it wipes and lubricates whereas the o- ring is a good seal but it won't lubricate. I'm sure one of the reasons Series last such a long time (along with Velocettes that also have no oil seals) is that everything is kept lubricated even where it is outside the engine or gearbox.

Blimmin thing arrived from Blanchards and it's the wrong size, by about half... Packet has the right part number, Blanchards say that all the ones they have are the same so it's on its way back. I have another on order from elsewhere, but if that's wrong too I'm going to do it with string like a stuffing box (James'll know what one of them is). Can't find the felt thing I had.

ive never seen a washer used only an o ring and ive seen a lot of all ages

I think I'm probably sticking to the (June 1988) parts book too hard James. The note applying to the part number it says that the 'washer' there is for the 109 One Ton and optional on the rest. I got the reference to it being felt from the various supplier websites that are all desperately keen to describe it, tell me how much it would be while hiding the loony cost of posting it - before saying there aren't any in stock.
