Hi, I have a 1989 110 fitted with the standard 2.5 TD engine (19J) and is using the standard LT77 5 speed box. My question is :- Is there another Transfer Box I can use to firstly reduce noise as I think my box is rather rattely. Secondly, to help on motorways an towing. I don`t want to change engine quite yet as it goes well, and gearbox is as sweet as a nut. Any info welcome. Thanks

If there is another Transfer Box I can use, How difficult is the job, any mods, does gearbox ave too come out!!

Iv just put a 200tdi in mine.

With it i put in the Defender 5 speed LT77 gearbox and the LT230 transfer box from the Disco!

I get all the ratio of the high range (For road) with the same low range gear ratio of the defender :D

easy,but you need to tap holes as hand brake different
 
No mate you will have to drop your gearbox out as one of the mounts is actually on your transferbox.

Its easy enough but will take a little prep, ie Props off, tunnel off, floor panels off, undo bellhousing bolts etc

Once youve got your box out youl be able to identify which bolts and linkages you need to take off mate. Pull the gear and tranfer box apart and mate your new one up in the reverse order you took off.

Its a fair bit of work but dont be put off its fairly straight forward, just have a good weekend at it and take ya time! Im no mechanic and i did it!

Right so how come I undid and separated the transfer box and fitted a transfer box in situ using a trolley jack to support gearbox? further to this others have done the same

Bollox do ya I just took the transfer box off me scrapper disco with out taking the gear box out.
just undo the 2 bolts that hold the transfer box onto the gearbox mount undo propshafts undo the nuts and bolts holding the transferbox to the gearbox and undo the handrake cable and it slides straight out.
 
no your a fooking idiot, taking the transfer box out complete with gearbox is totally un necessary-further to this on your back it's a ****ing monster even with three/four people..

removing the transfer box is straight forward and can be done with trolley jacks and two people.


Lastly teaching ya granny to suck eggs-wtf are you on

That fooking gearbox is heavy enough on it's own with nowt else attached to it and the body removed from the disco.

Your telling me you removed a complete transfer box and gearbox just for a transfer box change-thick as ****, or more likely full of ****. Mines an lt85 not lt77 but it's still not anyway like a front wheel drive box weight

No, i didnt remove the gearbox just to fit the transfer box. Like i said in my first post i said i did it all when i put my engine in!

Whats all this **** about penis sizes?

1)possible
2)safer than complete box and transfer box.
