Right tonight I aimed to get the old crossmember of but as usual I got distracted by buying parts
My engine is running like a bag of nails at the moment

And so while at a mates house I ended up buying another engine  but without turbo an injector pump, my theory is that there is something wrong in the head, valve stem seals or mabie bent push rods but I'm not sur and so I shall try the head of of the new engine and see if there is any difference, if not its the o rings :( :(
That's abit more of a bugger to change
Anyway pics o the new engine

Head off of the new engine :), this build us sponsored by crabbies ;)

And after a good bath in the parts cleaner :)

Also for pipe work improvements and generally making the engine bay nicer I also purchased a 300 tdi turbo :) this will swap directly onto my engine and mean I have space to run smoother bends of the pipes giving better air flow.
The 200tdi turbo will be for sale as soon as I take it off ;)

Excellent thread mate, I've got a 90 similar to what your building. I use it for trials and p&p days, one if the best mods I've done is fit large offset rims for trialing which give me full lock with no lock stops or rubbing!
Keep up the good work
:)

Thanks :)
Yeah some wider offset wheels are on the cards, preferably ride front narrow rear but this would probably make it terrible on the roads lol :)

I'm still undecided whether to move up to the next class for trials, this would allow me to remove the overhangs, play about with the suspention lot more add fiddles ect which of like to do but unsure on it yet as to whether I'm jumping in too far into the deep end lol :)

I run the challenger wheels (mach 5 replicas) there 7x16 et-25, ive found them good value for money and they give me good lock with there offset without sticking out too far, I thought about moving up to ccv classes but the motors id be up against would be too extreme to compete with. The best thing to do would be to build a ccv to compete with the big boys!

Suppose its all down to preference and what you use the motor for!

No it's not RTV, agains those who I regualarly compete against only about 3 are RTV's but there is one that's a space frame build that is RTV so there is still ability even if its extreme to get it road legal.

It does tempt me to go extreme, ill have to take a good look at the rule books and see wht I can get away with :)

Don't do it!!

keep in the group and until your winning each event dont move up. costs go throuh the roof OR you end up with a pile o crap hacked about motor.

Ref wheels does it matter how pretty they are?? Mach 5's are nioce looking but what else do they offer???

I can seeone advantage if seriously stuck you can put a rope through them.

The cost is silly a cheap set of rims remember weight is important heavier the more mass rotating you have but vs that strength. a nice set of Std LWB rear rims/110 rims tubless and run 2b forward control front rims. if you bend them (if youtrial alot you will) you can hammer them straight again. Bending a £200 rim is where you start to lose the FUN but hell it looks good

See that was my reasoning not to as the guys in the above class have been doing it a lot more than me, it was only as I've got it in so many pieces that it would be the easiest time to do all the modifying, your advice has been good so far jai so I would be tempted to listen again ;)

Great build this one, impressive!

Fabulous workshop space too, and enjoying the write up, top man :D

Haha too much praise for 1 post :)

Yeah I'm very lucky with the workshop space, we've got another bigger one on the other side but that's mainly for tractors, no ramps in there, :) ill be working on it all weekend so hopefully will be able to get some done :)
The only thing I need to buy is a mandrel bender for doing the wings and other projects :)

Well I've just got in so I best give you all an update :), began the engine rebuild tonight as you may have seen on the video she was smoking like hell,
Here's how she started tonight after I'd taken the radiator and intercooler off :)

So firstly I took the old head off to see what was wrong and surprisingly there didn't seem to be much wrong with the headgasket, the bores are unmarked which reduces the chance of it being the piston rings. But as you can see here there is definitely a lot of oil getting into no 1 cylinder

Now I don't know if the oil was leaking behind the gasket between the cylinder and the oil feed or whether the valve stem seals are completely destroyed, which I doubt there could be this much oil if this was so, so I decided to put on the spare head and see if that would fix it,

Fitted with new gaskets all around

And got her on all torqued up and that's where it was left tonight

The torque setting is 40nm and then 2 lots of 60 degrees from there starting from the middle and working outwards evenly.

Hoping tomorrow to get the turbo on and get it all running again to see if it made any difference. In sure it will be perfect ;) :)

Aswell as this I've cleaned a lot of parts, everything going on if cleaned beforehand so I know that everything is spotless :) plus it makes everything look nice, whether it makes any difference or not, there is a certain satisfaction of looking at nice clean parts :)

And here's a pic of what the workshop generally looks like on a weekend ;)

We do a lot of work on each others vehicles which makes the work load easier but there always seems to be more to do on mine than the others
