Hi again guys,
I've got another question / issue that I was hoping to get some confirmation on, and I thought I'd just reply to this as it has all the relevant info on about the car etc

I need to know whether it's the GVW of the freelander (2080kg) that matters for plating the trailer, or whether it's the towing capacity (2000kg)

Obviously the GVW would only allow a trailer of 1420kg MAM, whereas the towing capacity would allow the trailer to be 1500kg.

Is there anyone who can confirm which matters?
Or know who I can source the answer from?

Many thanks!
I believe that 1420kg is the maximum plated trailer you can tow ( assuming you passed your test after '97? ).

I am sure glad we can haul this with a regular drivers license

Check the car handbook, a Discovery can tow 3500kg but not with a full load in the car as well.

Limited to two people only if on coils or four people on air. Not sure how many people would know that to pick you up on it though.

It's in the Drivers Handbook, Technical Section, and also in RAVE.

I don't know what a CX5 is, but AFAIK, nothing is rated to tow over 3500kg without air brakes on the trailer.
UK domestic market you'll not find much that will tow over that.
But get a yank tank or similar and you can without air brakes. I wonder what a g36 6x6 am would tow?

on our yank tanks, the pictures I posted will be electric over hydraulic brakes on all axles

Yeah but the post I made is nothing to do with your pictures. The suburban has a higher than 3500kg towing limit as standard.

Depends which spec suburban you get as to engine, rear diffs ratio, and which wheel base. The newer ones are different than the old ones. new ones are 6000-6300lbs

UK weights are 3500kg max with overrun brakes, more if the trailer has power brakes and conforms to C&U reg's, but I don't know of any UK-built trailers which comply, especially since the October 2012 changes brought in by UNECE. USA-built trailers that have been imported and gone through Type Approval may comply, but as most are fitted with electric brakes, there are/were issues over the secondary brake and reserve.

Our Mercedes is plated at 13000 kg GCW with power brakes, but you have to have the correct trailer to do that, you cannot just chuck any trailer on the back and get the 7 tonne rating.

Gvw and mam are the same thing, so as blue dog says 1420kg trailer

Though not all cars and trailers are plated ;)

I realise that the max is 3500, or 4000 with air brakes ( I think ? ), just out of idle curiosity I was wondering if the CX-5's capacity allowed for a laden car trailer ( and what the trailer is rated at, as that's what's counted even if it's unladen ). Purely out of curiosity, I'm not accusing anyone of anything!
It can tow 2000kg braked. Not recommended though, it is freaking scary seeing as the car only weighs 1550kg!

So, if your landy is lighter than the manufacturer says it is, cos they are, how do you prove this?
Also, Sankeys arnt plated, how do you prove their weight?
