My defender currently has an adjustable towbar which is fitted to the crossmember and has some additional supports which bolt onto the chassis.

It get bashed a lot when we are laning on rock and I finally killed it in Wales at the weekend.

I have bent the whole thing outwards and ripped the supports from the chassis bracket.

It obviously is getting in the way, but I would still like the option of a towbar.

Any suggestions for something more durable.

Looks a good bit of kit. Take it off. Straiten it all up and only bolt it back on as required.

Apparently it limits the Defenders angles or something when off road (someone elses words

)

I do know it acts like a plough at times and more worrying it tends to slide off big rock steps on the towbar.

As the towbar height is adjustable could you move it higher and then adjust the support arms so they are also attached higher. You could then cut off the excess below?

Thats a good idea, thanks

When I tow my Ifor 510 its adjusted higher than the position shown in the pics, so it should be OK. I only lowered it to tow the trailer tent which is so light I'm not bothered about how it tows or nose weight or any of the normal considerations.

Looks like a Dixon Bate.
l have one on my 110 and it does reduce the departure angle a fair bit.
You could fit a NAS rear step with towbar, they are a fair bit higher and don't have the lower brackets at all.
But the tow ball is pretty high on these. You might need to check one out first on another Landy or maybe fit a cranked tow hitch on your trailer, if that's possible.

Take it off and get some crush tubes and then bolt directly to the cross member. Get a backing plate too. Had this set up before with no problems. I've now got your set up because I need the adjustable tow bar but I don't off-road much so it's fine for me.
