Hi all

I'm Steve from plymouth currently in the Royal Navy.

I bought a Auto TD5 04 Landmark Disco last year, 95K on the clock, good condition however things have taken a turn for the worst and I am lost.

Disco just had oil change, gearbox service, loom changed, new ball joints and rear air bags changed plus a load of other bits and bobs.

However...it started to produce a noise at 2k-2500k like a low rumbling sound and vibration, took it to an army engineer who plugged it into his laptop and said everything was fine...when it starts (sometimes) hot and cold if I floor the accelerator it crawls along for around 5 secs barely moving then all of a sudden flys. Then last week I was going on the motorway and no power, barely got into 3rd gear but the engine was screaming, uphill I can reach about 30 and it crawls, if I pull over stop and start it kinda resets itself but next to no power.

I checked the ecu red plug and there was oil so cleaned it all out and changed the loom again, also checked the ATF, when I undid the filler plug to suck some atf it came pouring out, most of the guides said you'd get around 2 litres but I had more than that out of the filler plug then another 2 litres from the sump drain. I removed the sump, new filter, gasket and fluid.

Also put a straight pipe on but that's really irrelevant at this stage ha ha.

anyway since doing that things are a little better but still get the rumbling sound and lack of power, sounds sweet at idle but almost feels like a slipping clutch on a manual.
I've had the bonnet open stationary and revved it and the intercooler hose isn't collapsing.

Any ideas...please help me, I'm at a loss as what to try next.

Has the ATF level in the gearbox been double-checked? (Correct procedure is to do it with the engine running)

filled until beading out the filler cap, engine run, went through all the gears then topped up again. Problems happenned with way more ATF than it should have had in it.

What was the fluid like that came out?

Black, brown, red??

Sounds like a poorly converter to me, or lack of fluid.

Is it revving the crap out of itself and not going anywhere?

the fluid has to be checked with the car in neutral and up to temp,

A thin bead of fluid should come out of the filler plug..

No idea but if you do manage to top yourself, can I have your Land Rover?

Your power issue will be your maf sensor + the delay! Unplug it for now until you get a new one, go genuine.. your vibration could be the down pipe or turbo heat shroud

Fluid was Brown pink, when we emptied it my mate (mechanic) said it smelt a bit burnt. and yes it revs like ****

If I unplug the may will it improve? if it doesn't does that mean it's ok?

same went in as came out but probably put in a little less than came out, as I said it came pouring out the filler cap.

Did you top it up with the motor running?

Or did you just top it up til it came out the hole and call it a day?

The first fill is "cold" with the motor off full it up till it comes out of the hole.

Then start the motor and run it through the gears stopping in each for 3-5 seconds ;)

Then open the filler plug and top it up till it comes out the hole, make sure you put the plug in with the motor running, if you don't oil from the cooler will run back and pish out the filler hole.

No I did it properly engine running went through the gears then topped it up again.
