Hi folks, Looking for some recommendations.

My Defender 110 CSW 300tdi has an electric fan fitted and the thermo switch is stuck open. Looking to replace it.

The thermo switch is on the Top hose to the rad and i'd like to keep it there if possible. I know the recommended placement is the bottom hose but i'm short on time so a quick replacement suits.

Any recommendations for a solid top hose Thermo Switch which will deal with the higher temps exiting the engine?

Cheers Rob

The X-Eng switch is as good as any but is designed for fitting in the bottom hose so with the supplied switch you might find the fan is running more than necessary (different value switches are available of course).
That said, you don't say what type of switch you already have so if fitting the an in-line one in the inlet-hose means cutting the hose you might as well fit it in the outlet-hose anyway. Is your existing one an in-line or the type that fits in through the joint?

Thanks :)

The existing thermo switch is an inline on the top hose so the top hose is already cut (Previous owner). I'm looking to install an inline replacement just for convenience for now then maybe swap to bottom when I have more time.

I'd seen the X-Eng ones but as you say they all seem to be bottom hose fit.

I don't know if there is one that works better than others on the top hose.

I have the X-Eng switch. It's a very nice piece of kit. It will be no good for the top hose though. It has two switch on settings, 88 or 92 degrees. Those temps are both too low for the top hose.

Personally, I would ditch the top hose switch and use one on the bottom hose. That way the fan will only switch on when the rad can't cope anymore and there is no guesswork involved.

I fitted one of these to my 200 TDI and it's only switched once - at the end of a 2 hour motorway trip when I was stuck in a traffic jam not moving for 20 mins.

Reading about there are some people saying the top hose is better as it measures the engine temperature as opposed to the cooled water from the radiator.

That makes some sense as its the engine you don't want to overheat I suppose. Based on that there must be a suitable higher temp top hose inline thermostat switch! (except for I cant find one) :D

Wot he said. You only need the fan to switch on when the rad isn't coping, so the bottom hose it is. I have the X-eng setup, although with the fan off a scrapped mondeo. It has never switched on yet on my 200:):)

I'd definitely like to do that at some point. Starting to look more likely.

No one else got a working top hose inline thermostat switch?

Not that mine is working!

If you really want the thermostat at the top (and mine is there though it's an in-fin near the top) then once you change your hose you could get a thermal switch and tap it into the gooseneck at the top of the engine. Cheap, simple and less likely to bugger something up in the long run (no wires that can't be secured).

When/if the control on mine ever goes to hell that's what I'm going to do.
