A screwdriver is ok on petrol engines, but the 300 is so noisy tht it is hard to pinpoint with that method.

The stethoscope will pin the noise down, they aren't eggspensive ;)
I've found one for a fiver so I'll get it ordered

When was timing belt last done? take drain plug out and check for debris ,assuming same as 200tdi.
I admit, I haven't done the timing belt. I've bought one ready but just not done done it yet. Keep shying away from it. I'll have to make a crankshaft to as well I would think.
I thought the 200s had a chain?

Sorry, been a while, stethoscope arrived and I've tried to listen but I'm still at a loss. The power issue is okay now that the injectors are done .
The noise is not there all the time now either. If I was to say anything sounded like it I would guess the injector pump.
If that were true, what would cause the noise in the pump?

Is starving somewhere imo. I had the same thing and rep!aced the lift pump only for it to come back later . I feared the injector was buggered.
Turned out I had little foam discs from inside the caps of my diesel additive (not paying attention at fill up) skulking around in the fuel tank. Every now and again one would get sucked onto the end of the pipe to the fuel pump. First noisy then no revs , then kaput. Wait half an hour, or crack the connector to break the vacuum and away you go..
You gots a fuel filter?

Yes, I've got a fuel filter. I ordered one as someone mentioned it on this thread earlier. I've not done it though as I'm worried that if the lift pump is not working then it won't restart as the vacuum would have been interrupted.
I should do it really :(

I had that noise from my injection pump on my 300 tdi when my fuel filter was blocked
Change filter and try

I would swap the filter then prime it may be as simple as that

So I had a complete lack of power on Saturday morning and it wouldn't go about 20!
So I bit the bullet and changed the filter
AMAZING!
Power restored and ticking now gone!
Who would have thought.... Go figure?

Thanks to every one for their help.
