I've found one for a fiver so I'll get it orderedA screwdriver is ok on petrol engines, but the 300 is so noisy tht it is hard to pinpoint with that method.
The stethoscope will pin the noise down, they aren't eggspensive
I admit, I haven't done the timing belt. I've bought one ready but just not done done it yet. Keep shying away from it. I'll have to make a crankshaft to as well I would think. When was timing belt last done? take drain plug out and check for debris ,assuming same as 200tdi.
I had that noise from my injection pump on my 300 tdi when my fuel filter was blocked
Change filter and try
Is starving somewhere imo. I had the same thing and rep!aced the lift pump only for it to come back later . I feared the injector was buggered.
Turned out I had little foam discs from inside the caps of my diesel additive (not paying attention at fill up) skulking around in the fuel tank. Every now and again one would get sucked onto the end of the pipe to the fuel pump. First noisy then no revs , then kaput. Wait half an hour, or crack the connector to break the vacuum and away you go..
You gots a fuel filter?

I would swap the filter then prime it may be as simple as that
