Hi All,

following on from earlier thread about white smoke, I duly set about to remove the offending gasket etc.

However, here's tomorrow's shopping list to thwart the stalemate I've hit:
Bread
Eggs
Milk
8mm deep 12-point socket to get the f&^%ing rocker cover bolts out.

Can't believe I ground to a halt for such a simple thing.

As an aside, does anyone know what thread they are? I've said 8mm because I got a ring spanner to fit one, but the thread is bigger than M5 and looks coarser than M6. Are they imperial?

1/4" UNC. Spanner size if 8 mm goes close is 5/16 AF.

Wondered about that Wammers but couldn't come up with a good reason why they've mixed metric and imperial

The head bolts are also unified threads 7/16" UNC 5/8" AF spanner size. DO NOT use a 16 mm twelve point socket on them. Use single hex 5/8" AF. At one time Rover V8s were entirely UNF/UNC threads AF spanner sizes.

I have some stainless steel socket cap allen set screws (or whatever they're called) in the correct thread you're welcome to if you want to replace them.

They are imperial, but you'll get an allen key in there easier than a socket!

I had the same problem, and changed them over when I did my head gaskets the other month. I only needed 4 of each length, but I had to buy a bag of 10. They're in my shed somewhere near the front so I should be able to get to them.

The whole V8 block is imperial as far back as the exhuast headers to exhaust pipe joint.

If you want 4 long ones, and 4 short ones send me your address, and I'll gladly send you a set. I can't imagine I'll need the ones I've got left over ever again.

The second P38 you'll get to make a matching pair.
