Landy Newby

New Member
Hi All,

Totally new to this world of Landys; on an impulse I've bought a Defender off ebay but having taken it to Challenger they've highlighted that the chassis and body and engine don't match (knew about the new engine not the body)... They said it's fairly common and that it might have to go through an SVA test - basically my question is:

1) is it a nightmare to put through an SVA
2) Am I better off just updating the V5 with the new engine (will I get asked any quesitons etc, will it be legal etc)

The main aim is just to pootle around and do some green laning, right now it has tax and MOT against the original vehicle which was a Defender 90 with a 2.4 diesel engine, the main difference is it's now running a 3.5 V8 petrol engine. I could insure it as the old vehicle but think this is a bit sketchy so any advice would be welcome!!

2.4 dezul probbably aint a landy injun, unless it was a puma. What is original on your motor?

liners slipping being the main problem if i recall. from what op says, could have been a rangie to start with

Hello Guys,

Not looking good from your first thoughts then! - Was originally a 1988 Land Rover, 4 cylinder 2286cc diesel - says first registered 1975 on the V5.

The guys taken out the original engine, gear box and springs and put in Range Rover bits instead, Chassis done at a later stage.... Ebay ad (pictures and chat) below - ignore his miss spelling!

Landrover Defender 90 3.5 v8
Landrover defender 90 in very good condition, rebuilt about 10 years ago on a new chassis, which is in very very good order with no welding at all!!!
It has standard coil spring suspension with 10 spline diff set up, the rear diff was reconditioned about 2 months ago costing a small fortune. Rebuilt using a series 3 id.
5 brand new tyres on alloys (spare on steel rim currently mounted on the bonnet) 265/75/r16 only fitted 20 miles ago. It has been recently converted to truck cab.
Engine is a 3.5 rover v8 running on zenith carbs which are actually quite economical if driven sensibly, it was rebuilt about 5 years ago and has not covered a lot of miles at all, on to a range rover automatic 4 speed box (which is awesome!).
It has 2 electric fans that turn on automatically with a override switch, pre-wired it is a harness for fog lights if you require them. Overall it sounds pretty nice when you start it up!!!
Interior of the defender is in good condition with no rips or tears on the seats, there are 2 seats both from a metro just because they are very comfortable for those long journeys.
Fitted to the dash is a tilt meter and decent meter, I have also modified the heater switch as the standard defender switch was never any good always getting stuck and not working.
The clocks say it has done 110k but realistically it is more like 25k since rebuilt, drives like it is brand new.
There is no radio fitted but all the wiring is there and it is very easy to fit one. I have fitted many security devices to the truck as they are quite desirable to theifs!!!!! 2 x battery isolators and a fuel pump cut of switch.
Painted in NATO green by hand with half a tin left for the buyer. Fitted is a mighty mean winch bumper but sadly there is no winch, all the wiring is there!
There is MOT for 12 months and TAX for 6 months, it will drive to the moon and back with no problems.
The bulkhead is solid but it has had a little welding about 2 months ago.
Bad Bits: needs a new bonnet cable, no roof head lining, needs tub to roof panel (although I have a wooden 1 fitted would look better with a metal 1)

Hasn't shown the pictures - trying again:

So it's an 1988 "90 with the v5 from a 1975 "88 leaf sprung s3. It bears no resemblance at all to a s3, in fact I'll guarantee the only bit from 75 is the number plate and the vin plates if it has any.

Looks to me like you've bought a right bitsa or maybe even a ringer.

And from those photos it looks a bit 'long' for a 90...rear tub looks odd to me.

I think you're right Storm, just looked at the enlarged pics on the ebay ad and it does look a bit long. Would be interesting if the OP could measure the wheelbase.

Going by what is on this list, your landy is made up of at least 3 different vehicles. As none of the bits on there belong on the type of vehicle it is registered as, you will need an SVA.

Hi,

Thanks for the last post - tis the most helpful one... I had assumed it needs an SVA but how do I go about doing this, how do I go about booking it in? Do I just book it straight in for an SVA or does it need any sort of pre test, I'd read somewhere that it might do.

Does anyone know any garages that take cars through SVAs - obvious issue being I need to declare it SORN when I get the papers through and then would need to get trade/special insurance to take to the SVA - does anyone know any providers of this?

Looking like a balls up from the comments here but the chaps at Challenger 4x4 thought it looked solid enough and reckoned once the papers had been sorted should at least double my money.

Regarding the comments from the database - no insurance currently due to the issue of what the hell do I insure it as!!

Basically - WTF do I do now without writing off the money spent?!

Ok - Have read links, really useful so thanks for sending them over however few key things outstanding:

Basically just want to use it for a bit of off-roading at the weekend, can't do a lot of mechnical stuff myself to get it up to scratch so best of just submitting for IVA, if it passes = result, if not then sending to garage for repairs?

insuring it might bean issue once its on a q too.Anyone know of insurers that like landies on Q plates?
