I"m thinking about changing my Freelander 1 for a Freelander 2 and I have seen one advertised at a bargain price so could I ask 2 questions.
1) Does the Mark 2 still have a Timing Chain like my older BMW engined TD4?
2) Engine Management Light stays on? Could this mean it needs big money spent on it?

I have considered a 2, but seeing the number of weird and mind blowing faults that come up here I am refurbing my F1 and keeping it. I've done too much to it and I know it too well. The thought of driving something that I don't understand and then it failing or locking me out or both is mind numbing!!

hmm ever driven a f2, looked at freelander 1 and freelander 2 posts 139 verses 149, many of the f2 posts were "considering buying a f2 etc" from what I have read on freelander and freelander 2 facebook pages the f2 comes out the winner. Touching wood my f2 has had no problems during the 2 yrs of owning it done 167000 k in it and I love it.
 
Well with the jap contender you are in the wrong place, th F2 however, apart from being the better vehicle, you know what level of support to expect. F1/F2 - thats asubjective choice, range rover or landrover... Really best thinking of an F2 as a small range Rover and a F2 as a small Land Rover. The F1 is easier to work on and fix yourself, the F2 is more refined but more laptop dependant.

There's a thread running ATM which I believe is a HDC ECU fault and the ECU's are coded to VIN so you need a new one from LR at £1,600. Robbing bastards.

Its storied like this, and the generic LR Tech response of "oh you needs a new BCM" - which leads me to not entertaining getting an F2 (or any LR released in the last 20 years). If they want to build cars like that, and charge like that for parts, then this fucker ain't going to help sustain the 2nd hand market and lower the ownership costs of them buying new.
 
The F2 is a great car to be honest, had F1's in the past although always petrol versions. Until I go back to a Defender the F2 is ideal for my needs.

Mine's been totally reliable so far 160k+ on the clock, owned 12 months, replaced haldex filter and oil when got it and so far so good. Timing belt / clutch done prior to me purchasing. I must admit I do ignore the slight whine from the rear end (dif or wh/brg) but this noise is nothing compared to driving my previous Defender's.

I have an ICarsoft at the ready for when the thing does go wrong....
 
Into three years of ownership of my FL2, the only problem I have had is the power steering pipe to the steering column corroded job sorted out with quite some ease, belts I changed when I first bought it, and they do not need doing again for 9 years, as will all FL 1or 2 TD4 regular oil change, oil filter, fuel filter every 5 years which are cheap, one of the cars that most drivers are missing out on, and the prices are coming down too.

But yes I would air on the caution side if the Engine Management Light stays on, or at least get the place you are thinking of buying it from have it tested first.
