Hi Everyone.... long time no speak :D

Well since I sold my 2001 TD4 Hardback in 2007 I've been missing driving a Freelander.... So was planning to buy a TD4 54 to 56 plate in Nov.
Have now the opportunity to buy a 54 (sep 2004) plate TD4 Station Wagon SE model 49K on clock, serviced every two years - for £6000. But have now discovered the following faults :(:-

Non Standard Alloys and one of them has a hefty dent in it.
Lip seal IRD right side
Prop Shaft Visco Bearings gone
Rear Diff front Bush
Exhaust End silencer big hole
Rear bleed nipple rounded off and needs drilling out etc
Both keys damaged (can't attach them to a keyring!)
Plus the tyres have loads of tread but are old and need replacing
Will need front brake discs and pads in a month or so

The people selling have dropped the price to £5000 as they need to sell it, but I have now lost my enthusiasim :eek: for this car..

A guy I know has said he can do most of the work except the alloys for around £1000.

What would you do????
Walk away or have the hassle of getting the work done?:rolleyes:


(PS; Its overall condition interior/paintwork is poor to fair)

Ah but am I saying buy it and get the work done and we all live happily ever after or am I saying run away and find one for more money thats been looked after better?

To be honest, the only real problems mechanically seem to be the bearing, the seal & the bleed nipple (maybe a recon unit might be the way to go on this).
As for the mickey mouse wheels, ebay regularly has good secondhand freelander wheels & good tyres for around £200 a set which solves that. Front discs & pads will probably need done around that mileage (mine did) & it cost me £60 for lucas TRW discs & mintex pads posted. Bushes will always need done on these be it front or rear as will balljoints etc.

Paintwork is a different story though if you feel it can't be recovered with a good cut & polish. This is where your expense will lie & is the one constant reminder of the deal you've done.

Thats a good point about the interior and paintwork being a constant reminder. The question now is will the imperfections drive me batty (quite likely) or not!

To be honest discs, pads, tyres and the exhust didnt concern me it and the others as single problems probably wouldn't either - its just having them all together. Also the alloys and overall condition are making me think the car has been treated like ****.

Good job I'm a switched on girlie or I'd be crying at the side of the road waiting for the RAC :p
 
Overall a neglected, poorly treated and poorly maintained car. Walk away, there'll be others.
 
Thanks everyone for your help, starting to think I will walk away...

So as I am now possibly offering a good home to a Freelander, what do you recommend spec wise.
Definatley want a TD4 SE minimum, but is Auto or Manual better. The one I had before was Auto and it was fab (it did have its faults of course), especially when towing the horsebox.

SE would be my choice, ensure you have a working heated screen and FBH.

Auto is best IMO and can always be used in manual mode when towing if you prefer.
I don't rate the clutches on manual box variants, they're only just up to the job and won't take much abuse, especially when heavy towing.
 
Plenty good ones about, wait for one of them rather than a badly looked after example that will likely just give trouble
 
My idea of getting another motor is getting one that has no problems.

My 04 plate Td4S SW had 78K on the clock when I bought it for £6K, and the only thing wrong was that it had the load space cover missing and 2 tyres would need replacing before the next MOT.

If you have to ask you are unsure, if you are unsure say no. Look for a better one!

i'd definitely wait for something better to come along.

So after Chasers advice am now looking for a nice well looked after TD4 SE Auto in November.... Will let you know how I get on....:)
 
Well, didn't quite go to plan! Now the proud owner of a 5dr 03 TD4 Serengeti! - But its a Freelander so I'm happy again :)
