Defiantly not bolts on fuel pump.

It something rotating that's knocking. Sounds like a hammer hitting something it that bad.

It is also reluctant to start.

I guess I'm going to have to start from scratch again but I'm certain timing is spot on, fly wheel pin fits , timing pin slides in easily now and the cam and crankshaft line up.

Ummm, there was a post in the last few days that mentioned that early 300tdi's had two slots in the flywheel, both quite close together, maybe this is your problem.

It does sound like a timing issue.

Yeh I posted about this earlier on in the thread as this was my first sticking point on this job, it the smaller of the two slots I have been told.

The crank mark lines up with arrow vertically and fly wheel pin lines up so this must be correct??

I'll have to strip it back down at weekend now. It's getting frustrating. It's not the most complicated task ever, yet I'm making it!!

Leave it tonight before I lose my temper!!

Thanks for all your help guys!! :)

Are you looking at the cam timing mark 'square on' at the front of the engine?. Looking down from above can make it look like its aligned when it isn't (parallax error). I assume you didn't touch / loosen any of the cam pulley bolts?

Yup, I removed radiator to make sure I was square on.
I haven't touched the cam pulley at all.

you missing a socket? :D

No I thought it was something like that to start with, it a very loud noise.

Going to check the rockers and pushrods makes sure I haven't bent one while turning it over by hand, can't think there be enough force to, but worth checking.

Snapped rocker and push rod. I guess first time timing was slightly out and lucky that all the damage it did.

Timing is defiantly correct so this much be the knocking noise!
