Hi all, I know how to do it with the locking pin etc but if I'm replacing my whole pump does the locking pin only fit in the correct position once? (ie if the pin goes in its correctly timed)

Cheers [emoji106]

there is the pin to go in the fuel pump, then the pin to lock the crank and obviously you have to time the camshaft to the crank as well.

if you are just replacing the fuel pump you can push it out the back with the special pump tool that holds the belt in place. (This is what i will be doing on my discovery edc pump)

Through a process of elimination its buggered. Had all 4 injectors checked but I've still got major starting issues with clouds of white diesely smelling smoke until warm. (A compression test showed no head issues and I'm using no water or pressurising the hoses either).

Yes the std timing hole will be just fine, there is also a a keeper pate down one side to lock the pump up 100 percent, but not really needed.

Runs fine when warm (still smells pretty diesely tho).

Thanks Lynall, I did know about the keeper plate but I'm not sure if the boy I'm getting it from does lol

I'm pretty certain in it as I've had my mechanic mate have a look.

I've plenty of DTI's lol. I'm a machinist by trade. I was actually watching a video last night on checking the lift with a DTI. How much better is it to set it like that over using the 3/8th dowel?

Knatts cock, but got to be worth a try, in all honesty they run okay even when timing is quite some way out.
Retarded is normally the biggest issue with the tdi and that can cause all sorts of smoke issues, a tadge advanced is good and they crack into life easy whatever the weather.
I forget to ask, is it an edc engine, ie no throttle cable?

It's got no throttle cable at present as it had a britpart one that I've binned as it always loosened off loosing loads of boost. It will have a genuine Land Rover one back on this week though.

Have to say britpart cable on mine last year or two no worries, rest of car is crap though!
I asked if it was edc as I had a smokey one and that was because it had been chipped

Just suggested that as a final check before you part with your beer tokens. If its in then you have definitely eliminated pump timing errors.

I think the pump shagged not out of timing. It could be the cold start thing (choke but can't remember the proper name lol)

Borrowed from another place.....

I reckon there is a cold start mechanism on my D300 and it's that which has gone wrong (massive over fueling) at start up causing my SAS smoke cloud in the mornings.
You may have notice a previous thread where a number of suggestions were made as to the cause of my cloud but my local mechanic and I believe it is something to do with the cold start timing of injector pump.

Which is basically my symptoms too

Haha no worries, at least you're trying to help me [emoji106]

My mate had a look when he arrived with his compression tester and reckons it's okay. I'll check it myself before removing the FIP (obviously lol)
