Hey guys,
I know that spending money on this before getting some sound advice from Landyzone members first would be madness!

Having now owned my P38 4.6 for nearly a year (and having spent a small fortune on bringing her up-to date!) I am now resigned to replacing the exhaust system as the current factory fitted is looking like a teabag and is starting to cause knock on problems!

Unfortunately, budget doesn’t allow me to start at the manifolds but I am hoping that I will be able to do these at a later date.

I am keen to upgrade the system to achieve a nice sound and of course, any small improvement in performance. The system I have been looking at is the 3” rolled Janspeed one as shown in this link; LANDROVER RANGE ROVER PEGASUS 4.0/4.2/4.6 HSE & 2.5TDi Janspeed Exhaust System Cat Back SS726 Only £470.46

Can anyone suggest anything better for similar money? Also what’s is the deal with removing the cats?
Would appreciate some help with this,

Thanks,
Charlie :)

I have the Janspeed cat back system from on mine although i got mine from roadrunner on t' bay. It's very good quality & gives a nice V8 'thrum'. Not too invasive on motorway etc. You have to cut away some of the rear valance but this helps make it look less 'after-market'. I only noticed a small improvement in initial pick-up performance though.
Removing the cats can be a problem with MOT (even on LPG). SS do sports cats in 200 or 100 cpi.

Thanks guys,

MOT understood! Cats stay!!

martynv8; did you check out the link? if so do you know if that is all I will need regarding back boxes etc (I the picture is misleading)...also am interested in the cats you mentioned....do they work with the Janspeed system and whats SS? sorry for firing back so many questions!!!

Thanks again,

Thanks again,

You can get a complete rear end pattern exhaust for £179.00. Retail, a lot less trade. Treated with a couple of cans of HT paint before fitting and maintained will last 8 to 10 years.

Yep, unless you need something different, a std exhaust of flee bay and some time painting it will see you right.
I got cat back fro my DSE for £90 delivered. It is over a yr old now and still looks like new.
If I get 3-4yrs from it I will be a happy bunny.

If you already have twin exhausts they will fit straight on. If not you will need to weld another hanger on the N/S. They arn't supplied with bolts etc.

Here is the link for the sports cats. The type depends on whether you have 2 sensors on the cats, not sure if your '99 will?

Do you have a pic of how the back of your car looks after you've modified the valance?

I think the consensus is that improvements in performance or mileage are mostly just the fact that its a new clean exhaust than anything exotic in or about the exhaust itself. Its a massive placebo effect! Improvement in sound however is possible but not easy which is why a custom-tuned exhaust costs so much. There is a good argument for stainless steel if you plan to keep the car for a long time (so it can amortize) or are feeling generous towards the next owner (because its unlikely it'll add anything to price you get). I think Wammer's and Don's advice up there is best. If you're interested when I did mine last year I bought a new back box and a friend helped me weld up pipes. Bog standard no increasing or decreasing radii etc etc and the only mod was we left out the centre box completely. It was a gamble that paid off - no change in sound in normal driving by rev past 3000 and the tone changes, gets hard-edged and angry and plays a bassline harmony you wouldn't normally hear. I love it! Cost peanuts.

Thanks guys,

All good stuff....I have decided to order the Janspeed catback system as I feel its a good option tried and tested.

The chap at my garage also has a 4.6 and has fitted the same system on his. The shame is that Janspeed no longer make the sports cats as an additional part to the exhaust (bugger)

Any idea where I can get hold of an alternative (aftermarket) set of sports cats? Also, whats the deal with the Lambda sensors (am guessing I will need these) I have only managed to find these so far; Range Rover 2 Sports Stainless Steel Exhaust Catalyst -V8 at www.rimmerbros.co.uk

Am also unsure what the difference between 100 cpsi and 200 cpsi is...anyone else?!

Thanks again guys.....Martyn, that is a much sweeter looking p38 than mine!

Have just learned that I need [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]4x 18mm LAMBDA SENSORS for any p38 post November 1998.

Hi,

Double S do sports cats (have a big advert in LRM magazine). £332 for 200cpi cats or £553 for 100 cpi. The link below is their site but there seems to be more info in LRM advert.
With a '99 i believe you will need the later model cat with 2 lambda sensor fittings as apposed to the earlier models with single sensor.
