After owning the 200 tdi Discovery for a number of years I must disagree with the answer that states Discoveries don't rust because they do. The outer body panels are aluminum and suffer from aluminum corrosion, the chassis and outriggers are steel and suffer from extensive rusting, especially if used off road and within the Farming community (cow muck and uric acid will rot most metals), front and rear bumpers are also steel and corrode after a few years and most of the inner panels and hidden frame work is steel and also prone to extensive corrosion. Main areas for rust are as follows :- Rear inner wheel arches, Rear luggage area floor plate above fuel tank and the main chassis side members above the rear axle. Fuel consumption on the 200 and 300 TDI's with the manual box averages 25mpg the auto box gives slightly less.

not if you get a good one, and rustproof it a lot
on the man vs auto
i chose auto, smoother and more controlled offroad, no worries about stalling on hillclimbes auto box is also a bit less likely to snap shafts etc as its a bit smoother on the power IMO

Just don't buy a sh1ter. Look at it properly before buying the same with any car.
Last week i decided to strip mine down and check everywhere for rust.
Largest part was a 10x6 cm hole in the o/s inner wing, couple of bits on the sills and corners of the rear doors.
After half a day with the welder and a few small bits of scrap metal all holes gone. Followed by 2 days of rust proofing with POR-15 and its sorted for years to come.
Yes Disco's do rust (pretty famous for it), but that doesn't mean there arn't any good ones. I bought mine from a farmer and its lived in a barn most its life and was used to tow massive trailers round the fields all year round and yet its one of the cleanest ones i've seen.
IMO you get a lot more for money with a disco compared to other 4x4's.
Oh and when it was standard i was getting 30mpg out of my manual including town driving and heavy towing.

Also to add my manual is great off road however i'm thinking of getting another one to use as a daily driver and to tow my car trailer.
If i do then i think i'll probably go for an auto.
