It'll be ok to drive for some time yet. It's the seal that is letting by some of the diff oil. It looks like a "creep" at the moment, so it's not a problem to leave until the weather improves. Just top up the diff oil and monitor how much is leaking by. When it starts to leave drips on the floor, more urgent attention will be needed. ;)

Didn't you just run it with odd tyres? That may have forced some oil out the diff. When new are all the same, top up oil and monitor. You may find the leak stops by itself. ;)
I getting new tyres Monday. Going to strip seal out Monday and top up
Am one that hates things that needs fixed. Got to fix straight away.if I got seal I would of started it today lol

Before condemning the seal. Make sure it didn't come out the breather. It's common for diffs to blow oil, when the wrong tyres are fitted. You could well find, there's nothing to fix. ;)

Hi says it no longer available
Is my car safe to drive or would it be best to leave it till seal fixed
As worried no oil left in it
There is more than 1 post on that thread, but if you don't want a free comprehensive workshop manual that tells you how to strip just about every part on the car, provide full electrical circuit diagrams, give diagnosis info for such things as the ABS etc etc, don't bother reading them.

Use the link in post #4, it is working.

If you're car is pre MY01 change the rave2000.iso to rave97.iso

No probs. Rave really is a great doc. Finding stuff in there can be a challenge at times, but only because there is so much in it.

Use those notes on the same post to get it to run - ie an 'iso' is an image of a (compact) disk. Therefore you need something like the VirtualCloneDrive to 'mount' it as a drive letter on your PC - you can't use it on Android or Apple OSs. One its mounted, just use Windows Explorer to view its content and run the Rave.exe which is a Rover bespoke version of Adobe PDF viewer.

There are some open/cracked PDF Rave files about. I have a few that I can use on my Droid.

Diff side seal is fairly easy to replace. Give the diff area a good clean / dust down before you start dismantling. I used a piece of 65mm steel down pipe as a drift to tap the seal into the diff casing. You don't have to take the drive shaft out either although it can be a bit of a wrestle moving it out of the way! You will need good solid blocks / car support stands to sit the rear end on. You may as well do the right hand side too!:)

" ...with hands..."??
One wheel up test uses a 1.2m bar, a 32mm socket on the hub nut and a 8kg weight on the end of the bar.
You are timing it moving from 45º to horizontal.
Less than a minute is good. Nearer to two minutes is bad.

Hi done test and got 20seconds. Gather that good

It is possible, although unlikely, that the VCU has failed in "Mondo" mode. Wet grass test will check that :).
