Well it is a jeep in the generic sense.
So are commercial defenders jeeps or vans?
Tylor - as much as I'm fan of the 1.8 FL, it is an enthusiasts vehicle, I dont think its what you are looking for.
You dont need to be mechanically minded to own one but it helps. Although if you do have some boating knowledge you are halfway there, probably tell some of the tratter boys a thing or two..
If you are towing a boat, you might want to think about a low ratio gearbox, Freelanders dont have them. The Suzuki Vitara has.
Its not unknown for steep slipways to trail boat and vehicle into the water, lowbox would be beneficial on those slipways.
Gravity....... BIG FORCES at work + no tyre friction = not good!
Again if its reliability you want, the Nissans and earlier Honda CRV's have 2wd and 4wd

What a f*cking bull**** you are writing here? the freelander petrol isn't as bad as you are writing. it depends on when the freelander is build. i have a 2004 petrol freelander, and it's quite good car. even the engine works good. no hgf, no waterloss, nothing since 50000 km. only oilchanging, filter changing, basta.
For a car from england not so bad.

My V6 Freelander was 5 years old with just over 30k miles when it blew a head gasket.
The MG TF which has the same 1.8 litre K series engine suffers the same problem, premature head gasket failure.
The K series engine hasn't got a bad reputation for nothing. I think you're just lucky with your Freelander BelAir1968.

bel end1968, are you for real????, a german saying the frelander is a good car??? do you have no knowledge of the german car industry?????
now as much of a landrover enthusiast that i am i am sensible to know that german cars are far more superior in both build quality and reliability.and i dint think landrover would sell many if their advertising campaign were to state "for a car from england its not so bad"
