Well to top off an already crap week decided to check the oil level on my 2000 W reg TD5.

As it was parked on a hill i thought i would move it to the front of my house which is flat, started fine then all of a sudden a strange metallic sound could be heard only lasting a few seconds.

Upon looking behind all i could see were clouds of what appear to be white smoke lots of smoke :( so switched the engine off. Will have to investigate tomorrow as its dark now, has anyone got any ideas ??

Thinking things couldn't get an worse i had to put the ignition on the wind the windows up, but to my horror i now have the abs and tc lights lit up permanently arrrgghhhhhh....... :mad:

With this being my first land Rover and only having it two weeks I'm being to wonder what i have let myself in for.....

sounds like it could be turbo sucking in oil. The lights on the dash normally wont go out until the engine is started.
 
Here's a quick update on what i have done so far...

Removed airbox to turbo pipe which has small amount of oil in it maybe coming from the rocker cover pipe ??

Close inspection of the turbo all fins seem ok but their does seem to be alot of play on the shaft maybe 1.0 - 2.0mm ??

Removed all intercooler hoses same again more oil in there, not bucket loads but its definitely engine oil. hose seems ok on the inlet side but the exhaust side seem very soft but no tears or rips..

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated...

Update No2...

Well with no obvious signs of a major fault decided to put it back together and test...

Started no probs just a small amount of smoke which cleared after a few seconds, the usual diesel noise till it warmed up but no more smoke. So off i went on a 10 mile trip with no problems.

On getting back i took the inlet to turbo hose off and it seems their is oil on the inlet again... could the seals in the turbo be on the way out ??

You said there was some play in the shaft, the bearings could have failed, letting oil out, so its a good chance.

Get yourself a Garnet rebuild kit, take the thing apart and fit all the new parts, simple - and should only cost you about £25-35.
