So now the needle is sitting in the correct position Before the stat was either opening early or failing to close.Mmm, well, I had a new one popped in a few weeks ago and now she is running with the needle just under the half way mark (about the thickness of the needle under).
Before, she was running between 1/4 and 1/3.
Also I have noticed that hse is now getting through more water/coolant than before.
I must admit, she doesn't go above the half way, but compared to before she is running much warmer.

Loss of water is another problem, you have a leak somewhere or HGF.
Head gasket failure. As it's a diesel, it's more likely you have a small water leak or the pressure cap is not sealing.Ah, so now she is running at a good temp. That's good news, thanks Datatek.
HGF???
Not sealing can be a problem, mine goes very tight long before it seals. Needs a strong hand to get it properly down.Wasn't there a problem a while back with the coolant caps not sealing or over pressurising the system?
If you are using coolant find out why.
Do you mean why use coolant?
Also, are you refering to using coolant on diesel?
