This might seem as a tad odd, but do the thermostats come with different values?

By that I mean, are some rated/set to kick in at lower temps and other at higher?

If so, what's what and where or how does one find out what's what?

In the past, you could certainly get thermostats with different opening temperatures, not sure now as there are so many different versions. There is no need to find out really, the OEM standard for the P38 works very well as long as it's a good quality item.

Mmm, well, I had a new one popped in a few weeks ago and now she is running with the needle just under the half way mark (about the thickness of the needle under).

Before, she was running between 1/4 and 1/3.

Also I have noticed that hse is now getting through more water/coolant than before.

I must admit, she doesn't go above the half way, but compared to before she is running much warmer.

So now the needle is sitting in the correct position:) Before the stat was either opening early or failing to close.
Loss of water is another problem, you have a leak somewhere or HGF.

Wasn't there a problem a while back with the coolant caps not sealing or over pressurising the system?

V8 engines thermostat opens at 88 degrees up to 1999. 85 degrees 1999 and on. Diesel 80 degrees. If you are using coolant find out why.

Do you mean why use coolant?

Also, are you refering to using coolant on diesel?

In post #3 you said you are using more coolant/water than before you had stat done. If so you must be losing it find out why this is happening. Gauge running more or less in centre of scale is correct.

Could be there was an airlock and that's why the level dropped? Of course, if it is still doing it then check all hose clips are screwed up tight and the expansion tank (as Datatek said).
