Hello all,

was planning on taking my p38 to Croatia this summer. My worry is that the current thermostat that is on it is suited for the temperature in the UK. In Croatia the temperature can creep up to 40 degrees and it is a very hilly country. Is it possible to find a thermostat that suits warm climates as with its current set up it will not cope.
 
The stat only restricts coolant flow to get the engine up to temperature it doesn't care about the outside temperature.
You should be looking at the parts that cool the engine. As said above; rad, pump, fan & hoses. A Rangie was designed to operate in any climate - as long as the systems are working correctly.

+1 on that and add the aircon fans mod as a back up to aid cooling.
 
make sure your rad, water pump and hoses are all good.
I do carry a 'modified' thermostat in the boot with the cuts removed. This is a just in case item that may help me if I get stuck with a overheat problem.
I suggest ensuring your thermostat as everything else works properly. I recommend a LR one

The cooling system seems to be in good order as the temp gauge never exceeds the first quarter of the scale. Will take on the advice and check all the hoses, etc and make sure it has a genuine LR thermostat.

If it never moves beyond the first quarter of the scale it's running to cool.
 
+1 just under 12.00.

Have you ever seen your thermostat? I would guess it has been tampered with.
 
Check, as already indicate, your thermostat.
(mine is like yours)

if you want you can try:
Meyle Thermostat 028 271 0005
(remember to make a small "hole").

But check and recheck your viscous fan unit.

Make the "mod AC fan" by Datatek, but only for SOS.

Mine runs better with Datas fan mod. Took the fan and cover off.

This now gives me great accessto water pump, thermostat and belts for in-field problems.

Fans don't come on unless I am pushing the car (towing uphill)

Sorry, but I don´t think like that:

1) I have another car who had a partially open termo, and did not have a viscous fan all the time... like our RR.
And I have my gauge go ups and down in the same day.
So it matters the opening temp.

2) My father in the past had a MB, that in hot days in Portugal start to "overheating".... he buy a special radiator.... but still was getting warm...
Buy a original termo from MB, still the same.
One day after a TAXI trip (with the same model and engine), the temp of the TAXI car was "normal",my father, ask to the driver what dis he do...." ask a thermo in MB official garage a thermo for a taxi car or a thermo for hot country";).

3) Form what I read, the "12H00" works in range of +- 80....100 ºC, read by a Nanocom.

Are the P38A so well made:rolleyes:??

Sounds like a fairy story to me, I used to live in Africa, never had to change the stat on any of the cars despite temperatures in the high fourties with 85% humidity.

Several users in Portugal had try, your "Mod" and did not work/like the result, has a viscous fan, replacement.
Sorry, it´s not "only" me;), or my RR cooling problem.

Also the Kenlowe 16 had a +- 50% satisfaction...
Some report they can not handle the job,
Others report they can handle, but the battery....

So guys, are the RR really ready to go around the world....

You talking V8 petrol or diesel? It's not that hot in Portugal. Anyone trying to go round the world in a P38 is mad.:rolleyes:

If it´s a fairy story, to me, and everyone who drives a DSE in August in Portugal, people reporting towing a DSE only with AC fan!

Datatek I believe you, but why manufacters had sat or termo swicth, with temperature range lower or higher???

They used to many years ago have different temperature stats, I'm not aware that different temperature stats are used on any modern car.
My last diesel ran happily with no fan unless I got stuck in traffic, electrics rarely come on on the P38 and it can get pretty warm in south west France, also I tow a fair bit.
Strange place Portugal.
