Am I being a real numpty here? Someone please tell me!

Whilst cleaning my rear windows today, and please note I am a newbie 90/Defender owner (having previously owned a Series 2A and a Series 3 Lightweight), it has just dawned on me that I have different windows to any other 90 that I have seen (and I have checked nearly all 300 or so on ebay!)! I have two rear windows on each side, whereas all other 90s only have 1.

Any comments/suggestions as to how someone might have arrived at this design? Weird, or not?

Cheers

Previous owner probley conveted van sides to windows, could not get the proper sliding windows

looks like a few vehicles have been stripped and put back together in any order....they are commercial or van sides with glass in. What does your log book say the vehicle is? As above...... looks okay but it aint right. Too many wrong bits?

why the fuss ,i be surprised if it wasnt now made of parts or modding as its called on here, doors bound to have been replaced as variious rear window arrangements

I have a feeling that there is a strengthening brace in the middle of the side panels. It could be that the previous owner didn't like the idea of chopping through them.

they look alright to me more secure than the sliding one peace windows

i hope you have a grill over that air intake on ya near side wing, if the engine is connected to it especially

Definitely has strengthening braces fitted between the side windows and I've just checked the back ones too. There is quite a bit of movement if you apply pressure to them, so it looks like it must have had van sides originally and now has 6 windows fitted at some stage in it's eventful past!

The wings didn't look right when I bought it as I didn't think the 90 had air intake vent in the sides and mine has them on both! And the doors have also been changed to push button version.

So all in all, a bit of a mix-and-match, but it all works so as james martin says, I probably needn't fuss. :)

The log book lists it as a Light 4x4 Utility - not sure if that is correct now it has windows!

And I have now fitted a grill over the air intake - apologies gas, this is an old photo.

Thanks for the tips/comments chaps. Always gratefully received.

arrrrrrrrr thanks for apologizing . thats a 1st for me...

i like them in black you just painted it, looks nice mate.

tyres look a bit flat tho........

That is correct - almost all Defenders prior to ~2002 were registered as Light Utility 4x4. Only a few (the exception rather than the rule) were registered correctly if they were a station wagon configuration (should have been Estate). The Puma's are apparently being registered correctly whilst LR / DVLA are willing to change Body Type to Estate for Td5's that were registered incorrectly.

Note in order to be an "Estate" it must have been manufactured in that configuration so if it's modified they cannot easily be changed (particularly in light of the London LEZ) which brought all of this to light.

Basically TfL are incompetent (insert desired expletive here if so desired) and the same can be said for the DVLA and the combination of the two, well...

I'm not surprised that Land Rover have tried to wash their hands of all of this (I suspect because of many older vehicles not being original bodywork etc they are not committing to say that SW or CSW Defenders prior to 2002 were "chiefly designed for the carrying of passengers").

Yep, they were a little. Now had black modulars fitted and put some air in the tyres ;)

It was originally red and a previous owner has sprayed it black. However, paint is peeling at an alarming rate off the bonnet, maybe down to the heat of the engine?

Here's a photo taken today, now with it's brand new rear qtr chassis, mud flaps, air intake vent and modulars :D
