Just cleaned out inlet manifold on a 2002 td4 not the first time but this one was a fcuking nightmare. Inlet ports closed by deposits to half size all most half an inch of hard crud coating the chamber.
Soaked in Mr muscle overnight then bottle brushes useless, Parafin bath then wire brush on flexible drive cleared pipe work still hard work still have chamber to clear.
Neighbour has bright idea after hearing me swearing, his idea local council yard where they steam clean rubbish carts and bins, 10 euros and 10 minutes of Steam at 100psi and its clean as a whistle,
 
Could always remove the inlet, pour a little petrol through it and set it alight. Works perfectly for the older L series in early Freelander 1's. Not recommended but works a treat
 
when I removed mine used a karcher and a steamer through it

bought a nilfisk steamer a few years ago , only a small one but brilliant little things and can pick them up for less that a £100 quid,

did fill up a container with hot water first and soaked it, along with Mr muscle kitchen cleaner that bubbles when it comes in contact with dirt etc, blasted the crap out, used the steamer to soften all the crap up then used the karcher again, couldn't belive how much junk came out of such a small item
 
Good jet washing will sort the manifold out along with oven cleaner or degreaser :D I keep three round me cleaned which we swap over at our meets, these are exchanged with members manifolds and then theirs are cleaned for the next meet and so on.


I change my at my yearly service along with the EGR and MAP sensor ;)

I cant post photo for some reason but you had to see this to believe it,I have never ever seen one this bad or with deposits so hard, the reason looks to be that some Spanish plonker had bent the valve in the EGR so was running open all the time that plus the woman that owns it cant remember when it was last serviced and she has owned it for 4 years.

I believe it don't you worry :( take a look at this EGR I removed from a members R75 and the manifold was the same :eek:

Anything like this one I took of a members car you can see how it as closes the inlet ports, personally I like to change these as a yearly service along with the oil and PCV filter etc.

Also clean the MAP sensor with some carb cleaner and clean the hole with a cable tie but do not poke to far in, just get the gunk out of the end

glad I done the egr bypass and pcv etc

done mine a few years ago and am tempted to remove it this summer and see how it is, will give me a good indication of how it's running

trying to think where my map sensor is on mine td4, can u use wd40 to clean it, only because I've got some

also read about a moving mechanism on the turbo ??

All the TD4 engines will have a MAP sensor it is bolted on to the side of the inlet manifold as here in the photo's, no TD4 inlet manifold should be cleaned without removing this first or you risk damaging it, these are not cheap £45.00 plus I cleaned mine not long after buying the FL1 link below cheers Arctic2

bless u, yep remember the map sensor now, but for the life of me can't remember if I cleaned the hole out at the end

u mention cleaning the engine ports out, would a hoover be an advantage to ensure when scraping all the cramp out can the. suck it out

have got a steamer and wondering when I take the inlet manifold off again if it's worth putting it i to the engine ports , bit wonder if would do any damage
