What's the mileage for this engine do you think @Merloch91 ?

Not the same, but I had a devil of a job starting a 250,000 mile Peugeot Partner Mk1 this time last year with new glow plugs that went duff almost instantly. On trying to start with brake cleaner, I got some inlet blow back too. So I think you're not far off recovering this.

I suspect your LP pump is not generating enough line pressure. I tend to put a one way valve on my diesels to stop leak back, but that's not relevant to your challenge.

Sounds like you know what you're doing to me. I've attached the PFJones troubleshooter for further guidance and thinking.
So all being original (though it is a LR :D) then it would be at 183k- though you can tell it was loved at one point- but 8 owners so when that was I don’t know. NGK plugs, silicon hoses and a newish looking crank pulley. The only bit that gives it a bit of age (through the mud) is the exhaust manifold.

It’s been a farmers abuse truck for 12 months, and before that who knows what it went through :rolleyes:.

but I do have good and bad news. When you said injector earlier it got me thinking- what if the recon one that came with the car was off an auto- took it out and stripped it to find it actually was :confused: so clearly I’m the idiot for trusting it to be correct.

anyway, swapped it and it started to fire up- but it’s rough :oops: and Smokey :oops: and dark, so I’ll get back to it tomorrow afternoon- maybe time for a compression test and a leak back check :rolleyes: then again it might just tell me to do one again in the morning :p

interestingly the td5 has a one way valve in the fuel line- the more you know :)

I just acquired my TD4 2005 manual but everything I am doing I am checking part numbers with the LR fiches and checking against my VIN too. I am surprised to hear the auto and manual engines have different injectors.

I unfortunately went on good faith from the guy I bought it from- lesson learnt one step closer to it running though :D

yes they are slightly different, think there’s a fuelling difference- been a while since I’ve heard of the reason why :D

lesson learnt though- now I know it was definitely fuel related I’ll start to rejuvenate that system.

Not doubting your discovery on injectors @Merloch91, but I was so surprised with your news that I just had to look at https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/parts/index/part/id/L6.L6G.L6G03.L6G03090/brand/land-rover/

I would presume new vs remanufactured would provide the same performance :eek:

For manual transmissions and FROM VIN 3A239592 onward STC4555 is new, STC4555E is remanufactured. So the one you have been "given" may also be for a manual but prior to VIN 3A239592, assuming you don't have aftermarket ones with a different make or part number. I hope this helps you further understand what's what. Don't forget to anneal the copper seating washers, if that's what's fitted, prior to refitting the injectors. I freaking hate leaks as much as engines do.

Oh this one was definitely for an auto, could tell by the internals. When you remove the pin/nozzle you can tell pretty quickly. When I bought the car it was listed as an “injector fault”, I did wonder why it wasn’t swapped with the one he had, though he said “didn’t have time”- which between the snapped rocker cover and seized in injectors I understand why he wanted rid :D
