So, I bit the bullet.
After a history of radiators.... One every two years as it goes.... I've invested in a direnza all aloy tank... 289€ to France and à mahle viscous fan to boot. I had borrowed @RisforRacingnotReverse 's fan and rad to go away with and I had no worries about shock cooling or rising needles. So a return to the fan along with a bumped up rad. Bieng tuned it obviously produces more power AND heat!!!! Hence the new rad every two years. The nissens didn't handle it to well after the top section bowed and let coolant under the baffle...

That's good to know.

GPi Racing on eBay was the firm Tomcat recommended for ally rads. If mine ever lets go I might go for one but Nissens has done me proud so far. The only time my needle climbed was foot to the floor up a very steep hill with a dumper truck on the trailer. After that I thought I might have to do the air-con fans mod for extra cooling but still not got around to it.

I'll keep the mod for offroading if and or when it may be needed but the old viscous fan debate has nothing in it for me from my own recent experience. I still get 30-32mpg at 70mph on the flat and it warms up reasonably quick... Not to conflit with others experience. ;)

I am a belt and braces sort of person. I like the idea of something mechanical when wading. Also. I don't feel comfortable enough that I understand enough to change it wholesale. I don't mind enhancing a bit, especially if they did it themselves on later models but I stop short of replacement.

Benefit to electric fan is wading off-road, can switch it off when you dip deep. The viscous can mash itself up as you rev to keep the exhaust flowing

It certainly spashes a bit. Mine seemed to survive OK although I cannot remember how long afterwards I had to replace it! I went too deep though - always a danger when you're in the zone. ;-)

Waded over the windscreen in the Defender many a time but I’m too wary in the ‘38 with all the electrics under the seats
I did go half way up the door once and nothing came in. Depends on the door seals i guess, remember one guy on here relocating the becm up above your head

That and the fact the air-intake is behind the wing. That's the bit that worried me. I hydro-locked an engine on an Astra once. Not pretty.

Had a boss did it on his 7series BMW once trying to cross a ford, oops. Lot of money it cost him. Best thing about it he owned a RR Classic as well. Personally we all thought that he thought at the time he was in the Rangie and not the BMW

On one of my club outings a young fellow in an older Toyota 4Runner drove too fast through a deep pool of water and killed his engine. I noticed his air intake was in the exact same place as the P38 so that caught my attention. He didn't hydro-lock the engine though as the air filter blocked all the water and cut off the air. Same thing might happen in the P38 but I would rather not experiment. With some improvisation you can fit a snorkel. I might have to do that if I keep following the Defender crowd around.

I went through a river that was running higher than usual in my P38 and only realised how high when I got near the middle. I had to make a decision and decided to cross my fingers and carry on. When I got out i checked the air-filter and it was wet with muddy water in there! Just got away with it. The GEMS has some weird dangly things on the air intake that look as though they are there to catch any water that gets past, not that I would want to rely on it. Seen a few P38s with snorkles. Suspect D2 one might fit with some fettling.
