ive not long bought my td5, put my list of things to do together and first on the list the egr,
i whipped it off and bloody heck i could believe how bad it was in there, the car has done 137,000 miles, the inlet manifold was so gunked up i couldnt even see the MAP sensor, i took a picture OF the MAP sensor after i cleaned in back in its places,
the ports on the manifold were so clogged up i couldnt fit a finger down them so no idea how the car was breathing,
anyway i cleaned it all out with a few litres of spirit and a bottle brush then jet washed, fitted an EGR blanking kit, and wow the car feels much better to drive,
it goes to show how bad things can get if you dont look after your engine

I suppose there are pros and cons about the EGR , I have removed mine , things go a little better , but the engine dose get hotter quicker , for the obvious reasons ,
you said your EGR was full of gunk , have you checked your Intercooler and your air filter , and your turbocharger for oil in the hoses , the MAP sensor on the inlet manifold is the end of the line , maybe the gunk is further along

steve[/QUthe house from the intercooler had only a slight bit of residue which i belive is normal, the airbox was dirty as hell but no oil at all, in the new year im going to pull the intercooler off to have a look,
the improvement ive had already is amazing but im planning on a remap next year, so yep ill be checking everything before hand, ive got the injector harness to do next has thats leaking luckily it hasnt flooded the ecu YET!!!!!!

elaborate..on which part ..the air filter , to the turbo to the input of the intercooler to the output of the intercooler via the EGR valve or not , or just to the inlet manafold,
the EGR valve is there for a valid reason , removing it will change certain parimeters on how the engine operates , maybe its a short term gain , eg, some extra power ,speed ,acceleration etc,,,, but I am sure there are some longer term side effects as well

not really no. bit like the 3+ miles of intake cars used to have. remove it improves throttle response with no negative affects.
the egr is much the same really. Lets see if any-one can correct me.

to some sort of Emmissions guidelines , and yes if we had no guidelines
on CO2 and some Oxides yes we could tune our motors to do lots of exciting things ,

Has anyone done any tests on TD5 s before and after EGR removal like testing for CO2 emmissions , to actually see , the difference,
Also what dose the current DOE requirment to pass this test ?

its there to remove nitrogen oxides by keeping combustion temps down by reducing the oxygen,but has a detrimental effect on oil from soot and acids

DOE only tests for smoke levels.

On a private car going for nct or mot etc where emissions are stricter, it's a possibility it could fail but there's plenty cars with EGRs removed that have just as good emissions.


I meant elaborate on the pros of it against the cons. Only pros I can see is that it may help reduce emissions but it's far more detrimental for the healthy running of the engine in my opinion.
 
When they start fitting EGRs to race cars I'll start to take them seriously. Until then its one of the first things that get binned from any of my motors. Never had a problem with MOTs and having seen the ****e that they feed back through your engine - No thanks!
