if my motors running like a bag of ****e (backfires on startup then runs lumpy like not all the cylinders are firing),and ive replaced the plugs, leads and dizzy cap what would be the next logical step? i'm running out of ideas! cheers:)

Appologies if this beginner sounds cheeky, but in my mind check the timing - is the advance/retard OK? any chance any grit got at it and locking it, or does it need lubricating? just a thought.

not cheeky at all buddy, is it hard to do though? i done a search for "distributor" earlier and came across some horror story of a bloke fiddling with his dizzy totally messing it up and now his motor doesnt start - kinda put me off, i dont wanna open it up and all sorts of bits falling apart on me. i'm not a mechanic and everything ive done so far i have had to learn myself or get advice off you guys. (new shocks, water pump/belt, distributor cap, HT leads, Spark plugs, exhaust/ filters lights etc) -im a haynes 3 spanner man! lol::D

PS: worst case ive got it booked in a week today with the local horse whisperer of discoveries (local mech) - i'd reckon he was probably born in 1!

air flow meter ?

Air flow meter, rotor arm or weak spark from the coil.

Try holding the ht lead to the top of the rotor arm and cranking the engine If there is a spark the rotor arm is fecked and going to earth. careful not to get shocked

What colour is the spark from the plugs?

Try disconnecting the air flow meter and seeing if it runs better. If it does then try slinging a new one on.

Does it just run like crap on lpg or petrol aswell? Lpg needs a really good spark and shows up ignition problems before petrol

Let engine run on tick over. Loosen dizzy clamp a tad. Rotate dizzy until engine sounds to be running smooth. Tighten clamp. See if that helps.
Have you replaced rotor arm and condenser and points? If not, then do so.

got a mate to have a look at it, it turned out to be a small hole after the MAF! I would have been there forever!
