Still waiting to see a picture of the new Defender next to the old Defender
I suspect their PR dept. has given instructions to those reviewers, under no circumstances.....
 
Does anyone know if the new tratter has plastic front wings like the Freelander 1 or metal ones like the Freelander 2?
 
The issue is at some point they will ban petrol and diesel cars completely. This will destroy the fuel industry, put millions of people out of work and cause the economic collapse of several countries tries around the world, but California, the environmental people and the EU won't care about this, all they will care about is that our emmisions will be next to nothing.
No they won't old son, banning is very very unlikely. In fact by the time electric vehicles get a proper foothold to even attempt this alternate propulsion via fusion power is likely to take off, which should tell you its many many decades hence from now.

Eye have had 15 years of peeps telling me ma hippo's not a propper 4x4. It can't go oft road. Its got no ground clearance. Its all b*llocks which eye ignore when taking it oft road and towing out stuck vehicles.

If yer worried about taking the new freel shorry tratter oft road, gerra Freelander instead. Lets be honest with ourselves ere. Lr have been making 4x4's fer years. They know what they're doing. They have a proven heritage...








with the brilliance of the Freelander 1 and 2 on and oft road. The new freelander 3 shorry new tratter will be ok. Its got independent suspension after all. ;)
"Snap" and you're back in the room . :) Having owned every model of Landrover made upto start of Evoque except a Lwt and several Freelander1 and a 1 FL2 yes the FL is a 4x4 but is not in the ball park compared with a series or defender when the going gets tough . That doesnt make it a bad car , but its in a similar niche to A Fiat Sedici (I have one ) that I bought to replace the FL . The sedici is fwd or fulltime 4wd with difflock option , and has 16" wheels and similar capability off road . As for land-rover knowing what they are doing because they have been doing it for a long time , there's been a few hiccups along the way , and this new defender shows they have been seduced into the world of spin trying to make people believe this new vehicle is a defender replacement , no they should have called it a Discovery HD . as that's about as far as it goes . Ineos is more honest from what I have read so far . JMHO
 
I like it, but I think they should do a very basic model. The days of buying any vehicle that you can repair in a field with minimal tools are long gone, the last defender that you could do this with was the 300tdi
I’m lucky enough to have a 300 td5 and puma 90s repair in a field never been stuck in one I think it’s like rest of the Re badging tradings off a great British name I won’t be buying one
 
No, I did not. I've been looking to replace my Forester, not the Subaru Forester.

I also have a set of purchase criteria that the new Defender has, criteria that I've been searching for, for some considerable time. It's a shame that when a new/replacement model is launched to market it is so heavily ridiculed. One can only imagine the mammoth task LR have had developing a new C21st Defender to replace one of the iconic of British vehicles. I'm nearing the end of reading The Land Rover Story. The written content in the middle to end of book is not what I was expecting as it details some of the remarkable battles the varying owners and management teams struggled with maintaining the Defender and even more so the complexities of continued funding and new model releases: in this highly competitive market LR with the new Defender appear to have achieved their objective. The new Defender may be Marmite to some, and being produced in Slovakia anathema to others, but it is the new Defender. It will grow on us and I for one hope it is a great vehicle and hugely successful.

I don't think the new Defender will grow on us. Just a luxury 4x4 in a sea of very good 4x4's.
It took a lot for the old Series/Defender to become as iconic as it did- 70 years, exploration everywhere, lack of viable alternatives at the time, completely versatile, simplicity of design.
Just slapping the Defender badge on this vehicle does not mean anything in the long term. It hasn't got the history, it won't be exploring all corners of the world, there are plenty of alternatives, and the design is complex not simple. A great vehicle but if they are hoping for it to become iconic like it's predecessor... don't think so
