I've heard that a billionaire is planning on making a 4x4 that JLR should have made instead of the new defender. It is to be called the Grenadier and will be built in Bridgend, near the old Ford engine plant. Apparently it will be simple in design like landrovers of old.

Construction of the factory for production of "Grenadier " has all ready begun. Not sure on the name as to will it be the company or vehicle name.

Buying in an engine makes sense. Reduces design costs and production costs. Parts supply will already be int place.

Not to mention LR fitted a few BMW engines in their time.
True. The ford contract for puma engine supply ended int 2017. LR have now come up with their own design of petrol and diesels which all use the half litre cylinder size design. In house supply will reduse costs if they make enough of each. They fit them to lr and jag. My FL2 has a pug engine with lr mods. FL1's were rover and one bmw.

It's common enough, companies sharing engines, Hyundai, Suzuki and Kia share engines. Vauxhall, Fiat, Peogeot share engines. Loads of vehicles use GM engines.

Why is everyone so scared of ECUs? If a node in a door fails your window might not work, its not going to leave you stranded and it won't take magical fairies to fix it.

Not much of a help if your in the middle of the African Bush.

More and more cars have integrated ecu controlled systems . My car, a Ford Focus would go into engine sulk mode intermittently just because of a bad connection in the instrument binical ! Took ages to find the problem,:mad: Plugging in to fault reader did not help. :mad:Main stealer robbed me and did not fix it. In the end I found the problem when I thwacked the dash in temper and it came back to life. Binical sent to specialist repairer who sorted it. That is why I don't like ecu's on everything
I may not be here in the African bush but West Wales is a close second when it comes to finding folk to fix stuff.;)

No, but a vast majority of land rovers don't ever venture onto the African bush.
Really? Have you spent much time in the African Bush? At least 4 African army's use them, the British army, park rangers, anti poaching police, tour guides, safari groups. Probably nearly as many LRs in Africa as in Britain.

So, with all these land rovers in Africa there are no garages equipped to repair any modern ones?

By and large no. That is why there are so many people on many forums and FB from Africa trying to buy 200 and 300tdis. For many Africans a modern garage could be hundreds if not thousands of miles away.

Lr have thought about this. They can download new firmware updates to the new tratter over the web. They will be able ter read fault codes and diagnostic info hopefully.

What? In the Bush, where there isn't even clean water and electricity? That's amazing. Let's face it, the new Defender is designed entirely for middle class people from predominantly industrialised and technologically plugged in nations. Not for people who in the middle of nowhere, who are actually going to use and abuse it. And that's fine, as an SUV to compete with the BMW X5, Merc G Wagon, Volvo XC40, Porsche Cayenne and Jaguar X Pace, it will do very very well. As a vehicle that working people are going to throw bricks into the back of, or other such things that will probably damage it, I really can't see it. I can't even see this ever being taken off road, except by rich playboys who could just buy another one on their gold card. In that respect, as yet another SUV, it will sell well.

So what happens if you have something none electrical related and the vehicle is immobilised?

Eye have had 15 years of peeps telling me ma hippo's not a propper 4x4. It can't go oft road. Its got no ground clearance. Its all b*llocks which eye ignore when taking it oft road and towing out stuck vehicles.

If yer worried about taking the new freel shorry tratter oft road, gerra Freelander instead. Lets be honest with ourselves ere. Lr have been making 4x4's fer years. They know what they're doing. They have a proven heritage...

with the brilliance of the Freelander 1 and 2 on and oft road. The new freelander 3 shorry new tratter will be ok. Its got independent suspension after all. ;)
