Thanks for all the advice, What is liquid gold?
I did take the pushrods out and have them placed in a trusty piece of cardboard. The lifters are still in place, what's the best way to check them?

So once I torque up all the head bolts I should leave them for a while to settle then torque them again before doing the angle tightening?

I could be wrong, but when you remove the lifters, submerge them in a tub of clean engine oil, or else the internal oil will leak out, and may take a short while to refill again....

Not sure how you test them - if at all....

In the instructions I have read about removing the cylinder heads it doesn't say anything about removing the lifters. Should I take them out and compress them? The engine never had a tapping noises.

No need to remove unles you are replacing them or taking the Camshaft out....

Lifters can expand when the weight is taken off them. So you can do two things, either take them out one at a time and compress them in a vice to retract them. OR when refitting the heads make sure all the pistons are below to cylinder top on that bank. Then after head is torqued down, and the rocker shaft is refitted to allow half an hour or so for the valve springs to apply pressure to the lifters to settle them. Then turn engine by hand a couple of times to ensure there are no fouls piston to valves. Over precaution maybe some will say, but standard practice and better than bending several valves when you crank the engine over for the first time. Whatever you do turn engine by hand to check for fouls before you crank it with the starter.

Thats great advice. Thank you.
I will take the lifters out and compress them before fitting the rocker gear. Give them a check over at the same time.

Just waiting for the parts to arrive. Will let you all know how I get on.

Another update. Dropped the exhaust valves of to the chap who's refurbing my cylinder heads today.
He tells me to come and have a look. They look good I say, all freshly skimmed ready for the valves to be seated in.
He then asks me if I can see any difference between them. On closer inspection shows me the difference.
They are two different he says. I said yes, a right one and a left one.
He then shows me, the right hand head looks standard, the left hand one has been ported and gas flowed.
Basically, the guy who done the head gaskets some 30k ago has fitted a different left hand head!
I am so ****ed of. I mean why? The engine was band new when I bright the car with landrover genuine parts stickes on it.

Did he drop the original head? Just wish he had told me.

As the saying goes. If you want something doing wright do it yourself!
