Ahhh but Freelander II is pretty reliable. (by LR standards!)

A friend's brand new Volvo V50 has spent more time in the workshop than on the road, ditto for another friend's new E-Class Merc. All cars go wrong! I wouldn't suggest the FLII is the most reliable car, but it's certainly not unreliable unlike the FL1 which was rather ropey or the second gen Nissan X-trail which was a disaster - diesels engines blowing up left right and centre.

That sounds about right. It certainly felt like it ran out of fuel .It proberly did run out of fuel ! There has been growing number of them not transferring fuel between the two halfs of the tank

Nissan is 50% owned by Renault. The Xtrail is crap, I had one, the Navarra is also trouble, bit like the Rangie, lock it leave it, come back it won't start

Unfortunately Renault has had more influence on Nissan than the other way round! The original Micra was the most reliable car you will ever buy - the current one is rubbish. The CashCow seems to be quite well made - those boys in Sunderland know how to screw a car together!
I think the Nissan Terrano and the Ford Maverick were basically the same motor. The X-Trail is a different beast entirely. Agree with the comment about the doozils - used to regularly blow turbos, but the petrol ones are fine. My 2.0 petrol has ben a brilliant (kiss if death) motor. Much better than a gaylander1 (petrol).

Yes the Maverick was a rebadged Terrano, the diesel x-trails didn't just blow turbos, engine failure is common, as you say the petrol is pretty robust.

Can you imagine the bad press if it was a Rover product? How often have you read about 10 of thousands of BMW 2.5 straight sixes having replacement engines from mishoned bores? 10 of thousands of VW 2 litre PD engines with oil pump failure, 10s of thousands of 2 litre PD VW engines with injector and/or injector loom failure causing sudden engine shutdown, Toyota 1.8 petrols burning engine oil. Thousands of injector failure problems stranding Mercedes blue efficiency diesels. The list goes on...

Strangely, Hyundai beat Honda to top spot in the last report I saw with Skoda second.
Toyota used to be great, but recently they have let themselves down. Kia has a 7 year warranty if you are buying new, must be reliable or they would soon be broke
Honda's are good but thirsty and the Vtec stuff is complicated.

I used skoda 1.9 diesels when i used to have a driving school . 200k miles of driving lesson miles easily. Nearly bought hyundai to replace skoda because of 5 year warrenty but it just didnt feel as solid a car as the skoda.Strangely, Hyundai beat Honda to top spot in the last report I saw with Skoda second.
