Thank you all so much for your advice. My son replaced the filter first but no luck. He then replaced the rear fuel pump and I am pleased to say that the car is working again. The pump sounds a bit noisy but he thinks that there may be some air in the system which should settle down. I printed off all your advice and gave it to him before he started working on the car. Once again thank you SO much for all your help.
 
Pleased you've fixed it. :) Others have found the cheaper pumps can be somewhat noisy. If it wasn't a genuine OEM pump then you may have to put up with the noise.
