Morning/Afternoon/Evening Chaps,

Not really a problem but more of a niggle. As long as i've owned the Landy, the temperature needle has always sat just below the middle of the guage once it had warmed up, no matter what sort of driving i would be doing. It would occasionally overheat but i had a bit of a leaky pipe somewhere underneath which meant that i would have to stick about 2 litres of water in it everyday but have now fixed this.

The thing is, the temperature has started creeping up again, the needle now sits between above middle and the red zone but the radiator isn't leaking anymore and i've checked that it is topped up. Have checked oil levels as well which are fine.

It's not anything like into the red zone but it does worry me that this could be a symptom of something about to go bang...!

Question: Is this something i should worry about, or should i just chill the fook out and put it down to the vagaries of old Land Rovers.

if it sits steady once warmed up i wouldn't bother about it. however as a precaution you could back flush the system,check yer thermostat is opening,and fill up with a good coolant mix. once you have done this leave the cap off and start it up if you see grey bubbles in the rad/header tank then be worried otherwise bung the cap back on and forget about it. assuming you don't got any more leaks
 
cheers for the tips i'll have a good look over it this weekend. What's just occurred to me is that all i've been doing since i've owned it is topping it up with water so the radiator probably has no coolant in it whatsoever now or if there is it'll be so diluted that it won't be worth anything, which might explain why it's running a bit warmer than it used to. first thing is like you say to get some decent coolant in it. i'll keep you posted.

give the rad a bloody good clean, inside and out.
amazing how many flies/bugs/leaves/trees etc.. you collect over the yrs. can reduce the rad to half of its effeciency.
 
Alright guys,

Just been up to garage near me to get rad flushing stuff and was given a cup full of Fairy non bio. Anyway - stuck that in, give it a good run out, emptied rad again and what came out looked like thin tomato soup but no sludge etc...have rinsed it through again and then filled up with coolant and water so will see what difference that makes if any...

P.s For any other novices out there, a fairly obvious tip: try and get out from underneath the car *before* draining rad!

sounds like you been running it on nowt but water, yer tomato soup is plain old rusty water
