when driving my 300tdi the temp goes right up when towing caravan and also does it when not doing it,i have today took thermastate out to see if this helps but if anyone can help me with this question pls help as at my ends wit,also this week i have topped my rad and expansion tank up about 3 times pls pls pls help

have you ever flushed and back flushed your radiator and cleaned the fins on it

If you are topping up that much, are there any leaks?
If not you may have popped the head gasket.
Usual route seems to be...
Rad silts up,
Engine gets hot
Head warps
Gasket blows
Header tank erupts in a fountain of steam
Wallet gets dented
As suggested flush the rad, put a new thermostat in, contrary to belief they don't run cooler without one, check the oil for water and water for oil, check exhaust for steam or odd smell which antifreeze makes when cooked.
Might as well flush the block too.
Good luck

yes we have we put rad flush in it then filled it up from rad to therma stat then headda tank it the still went up it normal sit in middle we have not towed for about a year but it did not move form middle when had a heavy caravan it seem to be starting to creep when we are going about 70mph but last night it went neasrly in to red at 55mph and when i check there was no water in headda tank i had but it in to around half way but need to top upp aging threw there as it was low the rad is ok

check rad is hot all over core if not fit new most common cause i found usually shows with extra strain on system ie hot day or towing,thermostat is working if top hose gets hot

With rad flush you have to dump the water and antifreeze and then fill system with clean water let run for awhile. Then dump the water and refill with new antifreeze and water and then check
the oil seem fine and there is nothing coming from exhust except a black smoke in morn we did have a new heater matrix back last yer but seem to be fine since there is a lot of heat on the driveers side around feet and legs seem to be coming from engine? but is not as warm in passengers side we but a newe thermstat in last week but did nit seem to do the trick i have took it out today and but it in boiling water and it did not open at all (might be a dodge one? )the temp rise slowly but when u but blowers on it settles back down i am scared to go on holidy now i case it blows help thank u
the prob started when towing we had not relised we had to fill the rad up not just hedda tank so it started to over heat and we pulled over some one said u need to fill rad up it took 10 liters plus more and then seemed fine till it was time to come home it started to rise agian we pulle dover and left it a while before we carried on now just seem to do it wht on a good run with out caravan we have took therma stat out to see if helps

you have to check rad by touch it fills and empties on same side and often so does the coolant

When you flushed out the radiator, did you get much muck out? When the engine is up to temp, does the radiator feel the same temp - roughly speaking - from top to bottom?
Is the viscous fan working properly?
When you flushed out the radiator and the engine block, did you refill with proper coolant or just water?
It sounds like the new thermostat is not working correctly so you need to get another. I buy mine from Paddocks for about £4 and have never had any problems with their's.

And now the rest of the story> you have to give the whole story in the start, even if it is painfull
so now the best advice is :mooning:get ready for some serious repairs and get a bank loan. The best advice is when ever you are taking a trip especially with a caravan is check your radiator, transmission and all fluid levels. This is going to cost more than a holiday now. good luck

I can't believe you didn't mention this earlier !!!! The whole cooling system is only 11ltrs so on your motor it was just about empty.
There is every chance you've blown the head gasket and warped the head

If it was me I was be contacting Turner Engineering, as they have several versions of the new heads for you to choose from. It won't be cheap but it will be good. Depends how long you intend to keep the Disco???
i want to keep it i love it we have just been advised to use a thing called k seal to see if it helps what should it sit at the temp gague it sit at half way most of the time then creeps up but not in to red part will it be safe to tow to lincon from coventry way?thank you i will look for turner engerining

Sounds like a bunch of ****. if that was a good product then would be no need to replace head gaskets and new heads. How much for a new motor?
Why not repair it the proper way now, it will be cheaper now than later when the rest of the motor goes bye bye. If that stuff was any good do you think the good mechanics would of told you to use it bye know. And who advised you to use it and did they guarantee it to work properly ?
